Star Citizen started development in 2010.  A lot of things that are reality today weren't even on roadmaps in 2010.  You can go back and redo things several years into development to take advantage of newer tech.  But if you constantly do that, you'll never make it to launch.  Speaking of which...
No... In 2010 there was no company remember?

What you had was CR and a bunch of family/friends trying out ways to make demo pitches to present to investors.

The actual first pitch demo shown to the general public only in the end of 2012 and launched the kickstart campaign.  From then on it was all mostly R&D and funding efforts to grow the company and access what was possible to do considering the incoming funding.

Their main studios (Manchester and Frankfurt) only opened in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

The playable online Universe main mode of Star Citizen only released to backers in the very end of 2015.  That is the early access of "Star Citizen", which as been updated since and continues to be so and played by thousands daily. Like all popular games it will keep on being iterated and improved upon along the years for as long as it has a supportive community.

I remember a long time ago this girl we knew was upset her boyfriend wouldn't marry her. An older guy looked over at our table and said, "Why buy the cow when you're getting the milk for free?" We all started laughing hysterically.

So, in this case, why release when you are getting everything you want without the headache of that finished product tag? Oh, there's bugs? Its beta! This needs to be added still? Well it is beta! I can honestly see why they are hesitant in releasing.. They promised the moon and more, its going to be almost impossible to please the crowd. Get your wallets fat now and when the ride is done, head off to the sunset with a full belly.

Agree with that sentiment... but just need to point out that it's still Alpha not even Beta  ;)
