Stop saying that war stole from wow!

Havoc01Havoc01 Member Posts: 113

Its annoying to see all these clueless people saying WAR is just a clone of WoW and that they steal ideas from Warcraft!

First off, Warhammer was around years before Warcraft.

Second, Warhammer was the first to have big green orcs, when Warcraft first came around Gamesworkshop tried to sue Blizzard for taking their orcs! (And sadly, Blizzard got away with it)

Third, WAR is going to focus on PVP that matters! Not pvp that is has no affect on the world like in WoW. PVE is not the main focus of this game.

Fourth, not only do the worlds of Warhammer and Warcraft and their characters seem similar, so do the ones in Warhammer 40k and Starcraft (Terran = Space Marines, Zerg = Tyranids, Protoss = Eldar)

WAR is a completely different ball game than WoW, and it looks like it will be a whole lot of fun.

For more information about Warhammer or WAR.

And Tolkein should sue all of em cause he had orcs and elves and halflings first!

They are known as Hobbits in Tolkein's works, and I don't believe that either Warcraft or Warhammer contain them (Maybe the WAR mmorpg)

I don't think it's so much that people think that Warhammer itself  is copied from WoW. Most people know it's based on the vintage tabletop battle game.

I think what annoys people is that it seems that the Warhammer Online folks have basically looked at WoW and decided that the best way to make money is to only choose the elements of Warhammer that are most like WoW to put in the online game.

As anyone who plays the original game knows, the Warhammer world is incredibly atmospheric - lots of great nations and races, brilliant pseudo-medieval setting, etc. They could have chosen to include Skaven, Bretonnians, Vampire Counts, Tomb Kings, etc. , but they didn't. There are a few original WH elements included (like Chaos and the Empire) but I get the feeling they put in Orcs and Elves because they thought hey, people are familiar with those, we'll make a WoW clone just to make sure we get enough money to break even.

Maybe I'm too cynical, but I really think it's a wasted opportunity. I love Warhammer but have no interest whatsoever in another stupid "orcs vs. elves" contest.

Hey, they need money too. The other races are less known and thus would attract less players, but they maybe added later or atleast appear as Dogs of War.

Hobbit is the name that Hobbits use for themselves, almost everyone else calls them Halflings. Particularly in Gondor (think of the dream Faramir and Boromir had).

Who is saying that? All I see on MMORPG.com is people hoping WAR will kill WoW.

Why have there been several threads posted recently by different people all claiming that "WoW is a rip-off of Warhammer" with precious little evidence and no consideration of the ideas that Warhammer stole from other sources (e.g. D&D, Moorcock, Tolkien).

I'm beginning to get suspicious that a certain games company is trying to stir up interest...

The idea of Orc’s, elves and so on has been around forever. Most of these elements are considered basic fantasy concepts.

Isn't Warhammer just another fantasy title?

I really liked the roleplay campaigns for Warhammer. The fantasy ones set in Germany. Really well written.

    I like Warhammer in general.

But one fantasy world is much the same as another. It's all stolen from Tolkein, not stolen from Warhammer. All of it, Elfquest, Warhammer, Dungeons and Dragons, Warcraft. But he wrote it over 50 years ago, so no one will be suing anyone, it's all common domain.

So... Warhammer Online is rehashing old stuff because World of Warcraft is already doing it?

Dang.  Such short memories we have.  Folks must have forgotten that EQ had three flavors of elves, and dwarves, at one time.  Not to mention the upteen billions of fantasy online RPGs that have mostly had the same thing (elves, dwarves, etc.).

If you intend to hate Warhammer Online, at least try to find a more legitimate reason than "it's the same as WOW".  WOW has broken absolutely no new ground when it comes to the setting.  EQ didn't, either.  If we're not gonna nit-pick those two older games, it's far, far too late to do it to WAR.

As for me... it looks nice so far, but until I can put in some quality time on the gameplay, looks don't mean squat.
