This probably has more to do with Riot's future MMORPG than anything. Having a good server base to build your game from is essential for modern MMORPGS. ESPECIALLY when you start looking into "cloud" based servers, which basically is when you have 100's of physical servers all running the same game instance, and each server handles say 1000 players or so. And even though I might be on server instance A and you on server instance B we can still see each other and interact thanks to the servers being in the same "hub". Next gen mmorpgs will absolutely be leveraging this technology to give higher player counts and smoother operation of high player count games.
