She truly was a pioneer in her day, I can't recall many black women who were on TV back in the mid 60s, and if there were they probably were in a stereotypical comedic or singing role.

    RIP

I loved her and I watched the original series when it aired on TV. I simply adored her and thought she was gorgeous.

I heard that her kiss with Kirk was the first time a white man had kissed a black women on US TV. In many ways ST along with other SF of that era reflected the society young people wanted to live in and by and large we now do.

Almost as shocking as when Kirk closed an episode with "let's get the hell out of here."

My parents wouldn't have let me watch it anymore if they knew at the time, but fortunately my sister and I were watching it upstairs out of their view.

    ;)

It caused quite a stir at the time. Some stations wouldn't even broadcast it.

By and large we live in a world largely unlike that presented in ToS. There is no global harmony or economic and social utopia. War remains. Prejudice lingers. Suffering flourishes. In many ways we're closer to the Mirror universe.

There has been some improvement but there in long, long way to go before we could say the real world and that shown in ToS are by and large similar.

It would be nice though. Maybe someday the world will collectively give it a go.

this is some wierd nerdy shit

Dedicated fans of speculative fiction are often weird, nerdy people. I'm happy for it in general, and particularly so in this instance. She had a ground breaking role for the time and performed admirably in it. We are diminished by her absence.

Will we someday be diminished by yours? That's entirely up to you, of course. I wish you well should you so strive.

I don't think what Knight is saying was presented in ToS, I think those ideas were far more presented in the ToS films and ST Next Gen.

What ToS concentrated on was that everybody could live together, I am not sure they pushed the idea of global and economic utopia that much. Quite happy if you tell me I am wrong, I think those ideas where implied but hardly ever stated.

    Sad news indeed.

Loved Uhura in the original and Zoe Saldana is a worthy successor in the rebooted alternate universe version.
