So far, 3.17 is far more playable and fun than my time in he Meridian 59 open beta!  It'll be interesting to see what the imminent 3.18 patch will bring.

Its sort of like Rings of Power I suppose. Its not ALL bad, the 'scenery' (CGI) in it arent horrible and can sometimes look cool. But it cost a BILLION dollars.

Same with Star Citizen tech demo I suppose. It should (after 12 years) be at least playable at this point. Also have some 'fun' factors considering its closing in on half a BILLION (which in original Chris Roberts math was what 2 billion?) spent on it.

I would venture to say you give ANYONE, and I do mean ANYONE with even a modest ability to develop, produce, code anything video game related and they would have come up with something much better especially after 12 years.

irony is that Amazon basically 'finished' the original excuse these guys had for not developing this project faster... the game engine. Now Amazon has released the most over priced piece of trash based on an iconic IP. Also their own game has failed miserably despite paid 'influencers' trying to polish the turd that was the new update.

Amazon should stick to circumventing tax laws and delivering packages for free maybe and leave media to people who dont need to put billions of dollars into projects that completely and utterly fail to deliver.

Everything is "easy" for the person who doesn't have to do it, as is often said by me with regards to software development by the teams I've worked with over the years.

There have been dozens if not hundreds of games actually released, along with many still in early access. And none of them cost anywhere near 500 million and I would say that all of them combined probably didnt 'need' that much to release an actually playable game.

Just because the grifter Roberts has been buoyed up by the people he has fleeced to continually move the goal post by making everything 'better' (while ironically never actually making ANYTHING)  doesnt mean much to anyone with common sense.

The copium (to coin the new catch phrase these days) in SC 'backers' is amazing. They try and find any and every excuse to justify this catastrophe.

As it is and has been for years now....the ONLY claim to fame of this project is the amount of money they have been able to extract from people. Including so called 'investors'. Which has also raised red flags along the way with how those financial exchanges have evolved over time. There certainly isnt anything gameplay related that people who support this can point to as a reason to be excited about.

I also suspect 90% of the people who continue to praise it realize its never going to actually release, and at best will continue as it has for the past 7 or 8 years,  a semi playable tech demo with a few dozen hardcore people playing it and a slight uptick when a 'major' 'update' happens. All I can say is Roberts found the exact right audience for his scam because despite every thing showing this is a complete and utter failure people continue to pour money into it. Also maybe because they know that is the only thing that is keeping it available even it its current pre alpha state.

    No man sky

It blows SC out of water in literally everything. Now go ahead and start some mental gymnastics and mumbling about revolutionary SC gameplay that currently cannot even persist objects and is borderline unplayable due to bugs, terrible performance etc...You are not capable of anything smarter

SC is lacking over 100 features to be even comparable to NMS...and Im not talking about small features like a friggin barista on a space station - Im talking tameable animals, base buldings, settlement building, NPC hiring, uderwater combat, destructible fauna/flora, destructible environment, functional capital ships, functional repairing, refining, crafting, economics, AI, VR support...rofl the more I write the more pathetic SC is in comparison

I've tried No Man Sky but the simple lack of flight model and no hotas support makes it impossible to take serious as a space sim. :D

Flying space ships Is something I value a lot more than taming animals or blasting/building coloured pixels. The fact that it's a single-player game at heart with tacked on (very limited) multiplayer instead of a pure online universe shared by all players is also a turn off. There's many more reasons why I prefer SC but those are the core ones.

    Next.

So comparing a procedurly generated fully released (after many years of fixes) game to a game that is still in alpha...ok, cool story bro.

Comparing a game that took literally off-the-shelf tech to a game that is pioneering tech that will change the way games are made...ok, cool story bro.

Also, lol CIG didn't anticipate the insane amount of funding that they would receive so the scope of Star Citizen has expanded by many degrees, which ok I get it, ten years of Dev time is a lot to swallow compared to the amount of progress we have seen so far, so I will give you a 50% decent point on that topic, only 50% because of the aforementioned feature expansion.

But yeah, hey you're doing great champ, awesome example. LOL

Neither No Man's Sky nor Star Citizen were made with off-the-shelf tech. Whether you hate them or love them, both of them are using a lot of their own tech for stuff that doesn't have off-the-shelf solutions available.

So you're saying NMS invented procedural generation? Because they didn't. Their only claim to fame is how such a tiny studio could produce such a massive project so quickly. And the answer is above.

Of course not. They just made their own procedural generator and modified game engine to do different things than off-the-shelf solutions, and with that were able to make a game that's quite a bit different from other games.

Can you give examples? Because I play SC every fleefly and the only thing its pioneering is the insane amount of wasted resources on to create unplayable shitty shooter with 0 groundbreaking features

Now youre gonna start some mumbling about revolutionary server meshing that currently doesnt exist, its base layer got so bugged and messy on evocati they had to postpone its release and this all is just a terribly complicated fix to bad server architecture...because SC TOTALLY DOESNT use off-the-shelf tech like an outdated cry-engine and lumberyard extension because they were unable to extend the capabilities for multiplayer on their own..rofl

Meanwhile 20 guys managed to create their own engine capable of holding a literal galaxy where I can create complex bases filled with electricity grids, mining and proessing factories on any of the planets and any other player can visit those...something no other game have ever managed and something SC will definately NEVER manage ;)

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

I find it funny how we are still shaming the company for its billion dollar fundraising and how it's supposed to cover all expenses to make one of the most ambitious MMORPG project ever created.

I don't know how many of you are in the tech industry, but some of you probably know of Adobe's acquisition of Figma for $20 BILLION. And of course, Elon Musks Twitter purchase of $44 BILLION.

If you compare a product/company like Figma to the Star Citizen project, I'd say that one project is more complex than the other.

I'm no SC fan boy. Just getting tired of people expecting 1-2 Billions being enough to produce everything.

1-2 billion on video game development is not really even debatably reasonable.  It's far in excess of what a AAA game costs to develop.

Hell, 1 billion would far exceed the development and marketing budget of AAA games.

The prices you're quoting have nothing to do with development.  $44 million for Twitter has nothing to do with development costs.  It's the value of an application already written and making money.

I look at it this way:

He's not spending a billion on a video game.  He's spending a portion of that.  The rest is profit.

With successful websites and programs the buyer isn't paying based on how much it would cost to make. They're paying because after being made it was successful, gained a large audience, and beat a lot of competitors.

Most of programs and websites like that never make it big. If you want to build your own that most likely fails it's cheap compared to buying the one that already made it big.
