In a new interview, Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida mused about a new game mode for the MMO - hypothetical of course. Surprisingly, a battle royale featuring the Blue Mage class was brought up.

While it may fit ok into a single player game, it's been a struggle to incorporate this into a full mmo.
I'd take a BLU Battle Royale simply for the fact that it's more BLU content. xD

You do know BLU can be played in FF11 which is a mmo? It’s just pure laziness from SE not to implement it properly in FF14

Well, the main difference between 11 and 14 is 14's obsession with balance. Keep in mind that 14 was rebuilt to be a direct competitor to WoW at the time, so a lot of the direction of that game took a lot of stuff from WoW. 11 is a game that embraces imbalance, which is why a lot of jobs in that game can do stuff other jobs can't, like RDMs/BSTs/PUPs/BLUs/SMNs being able to solo certain bosses/content etc.
It can be agreed that yes, it is laziness, but i think we can also all agree that this current version of Blue mage would break the game; i mean they'd have to nerf it and bring the spell system in line with the current balance of others jobs;(which would suck) and just the way Dungeons and Raiding works in 14 versus 11 is very VERY different, it's like night and day.
So yes, i agree on the laziness part, but we can't time travel back to when they created this job to let them know that in advance. xD

Keep in mind he was asked what game mode he'd like to see incorporated into FFXIV, not what new game he'd like to create in addition to it.
Probably the dream of many MMORPG developers, be to figure out a way to incorporate an enjoyable, fair and balanced PVP model into their games, a task which has eluded most of them I think.
