Shroud of the Avatar's community manager has confirmed what many feared (and we reported on Saturday): the build on the current test client is indeed from August following server outages the past week. As such, the team at Catnip has laid out some of its plans to recover and restore accounts affected.

The worst run game of any MMO I have ever played. They actually banned me from their forums for giving the game a negative review on Steam. And paleoblade, I think they have 4 players.

The game is in such a rough state. I tried playing it the other day, on the option for offline single player, I could not finish the tutorial before uninstalling it. Just the UI is so bad and hard to read. It's dark and transparent, has no borders, you can't tell which window is on top of another, it's just a mess. The game is fundamentally flawed.

I only play single player/offline mode. Gameplay is a little different, it isn't cookie cutter, some interesting zones and dungeons. I can't do the online/multiplayer. To many "housing areas" that are just empty, sad and pathetic. Can't believe the big backers spent all that money on castles that really didn't have a great architectural layout.

Honestly I'm really enjoying the game especially once you make it pass that horrible new player onboarding the tutorial really does suck it's not much of a tutorial they give you a text dump in a book and send you on your way however once you make it past that first area the game does open up and it gets a lot more fun the community is really great probably the least toxic communities I've ever seen in an MMO and there's a lot more than three players and this really is one of those games you can't go by the steam charts because for some reason most of the player base prefer the Standalone launcher to steam that one I don't understand

Well if one positive thing came from this database issue is that the player base has gone up 2x this month :)

I still play and probably will for many years to come. still one of my favorite games. it was a rough start but over 8+ years with major patches every month its come a long ways. Still waiting on the new Unity 2021 update which was to be this last month or next but now pushed to most likely Nov. That will open up a bunch of new stuff for devs on the back end, as well more current optimizations and new optimized shader :)

they are still rolling out compensations, all XP, and in game store bought stuff got returned. They are just about to do a dev market thing to restore the few remaining missing things for folks that started things in that last month that they rolled back. so in the end we should be all good with only some time lost which is pretty good considering.

As to those that got banned from the forums that had nothing to do with steam review lol. They tend to only ban those who troll the forums and start fights with devs / players just to get a rise. it takes a lot to get banned from the forums ;) just saying.

Good luck to you @Xee2018, I know you and others enjoy playing and I hope the dev team is able to make everyone mostly happy so you all can continue playing for many years to come.

Shame you all aren't treated a little better by the Devs in terms of delivery quality, but it is what it is.

    Cheers!

Chris and those proudly paying for this kept saying upkeep costs were minimal.

I guess we now know why? ???

@Xee2018 is quite correct - Portalarium have always made sure to get rid of those pesky $1.5k+ trolls who fail to be conciliatory when banned for saying that Shroud wasn't KSed as an MMO!

It's not really a matter of acceptance. They should have been better able to avoid that but were not. Now there is nothing for it but to bite that bullet if they wish to continue and then take measures to ensure it never happens again.

Keep that Frankenstein monster walking, yes yes, this is good for the market, yes yes.

We need more folks to dump revenue into unfinished and irresponsible projects, yes yes.  That way, studios will realize that potential revenue is now tied up and cannot be spent on an innovative, risky, finished project bankrolled by traditional methods, yes yes.

    It IS about acceptance.

The amount of This Is Fine until the house of cards imploded says it all about the denial the Shroud community have for the incompetence of their developers, instead trying to kiss butt like the tinpot despot Richard Garriott didn't bugger off to a different game. You should have seen alllllll of the community's excuses that even ran into power outages and even drive failure! The developers themselves said that Reddit had a conspiracy theory about Shroud being held ransom for 2 bitcoin, and basically "Gosh, we would have paid that to avoid this whole mess, how silly is that?"

Like most things from Chris Spears when he tries to avoid responsibility, the conspiracy theory was sourced from their own Discord.* Honesty was one of the first Forsaken Virtues, quickly followed by Valor. This community have been running on refined weapons-grade copium so long they're in on the deception, shady, and jank, until they're excusing a dev state that can no longer verify backups per the QA the same community were begging to have for years. Indeed, that should have been the sign that all was not well, but this community has been used to being crapped on for years, even by their own cargo cult of personality big man Richard Garriott leaving them for an NFT MMO.

This happened while Chris Spears was off failing to make a website for MMONFT - the self-professed Tech Lord tried to cheap out $20/mo and used a Hobby-level Vercel account for a business and was publicly told to pay up** - LOL - so now the website link on the Facebook page loops right back to the Facebook page:

How it got there doesn't much matter once you are there. What matters is what there is and what options are available to get out of it.

In this case a hefty rollback is required. It need be done no matter how acceptable it is felt to be or there will be no recovery at all.

None of the details mentioned alter that.

LOL @ trying to cut context like one of the apologists because you can't bother.

For the third time, and hopefully brief enough for you to understand: the reason why this happened is why it never will recover and why it will happen again. I validate the snark behind saying it like this by pointing to what happened two releases later with 108 was due to... the exact same thing.

Thank you and have a nice day. :)

First time, third time, hundredth time... what was not subject to acceptance remains not so. The situation happened regardless of acceptance. That needed for recovery was that needed for recovery regardless of acceptance. Rejected facts remain facts.

Some people want games like that. If it had performed better on my machine I would have been more inclined to keep playing it.

I play it mainly because I have not gotten bored yet. the Endless Tread mill is great for people who need something to constantly progress too. I leave games when I run out of content or progression. SOTA is a hard game to run out of things with its unlimited skill levels. Now if something comes along that offers a crafting system and better housing system with open class system on a better engine with updated graphics you may see some move but so far nothing out there is pulling on my strings yet. there are some good mmo's coming in the future but nothing yet imo that I have not already played and capped.
