<snip to Walsh's comment>
I'm always disappointed, but unfortunately, less and less surprised when I read articles like this - about any studio. Articles like this containing biased, unsubstantiated information are not beneficial to our industry. They're misleading at best, and outright damaging at worst. The sheer amount of misinformation in this article is nauseating. <snip>
Honestly, Walsh is good at pretending his 'industry' is anything close to the gaming industry this site is supposed to follow. I'm convinced that his 'industry' is more aligned with fundraising under false pretenses. He may think he has some kind of IP on 'misinformation'; he's simply taking the current political stance here -- calling everything said in opposition to him 'misinformation'.
Keep pressing against these scurrilous scams, MMORPG.com. Too many people are being hurt by these PiedPiper-esque development efforts.
It isn't just backers of said projects, either.
These things do not exist in a vacuum. All of that money wasted is now money not available to support legitimate projects. It's money removed from the market based on a scam. It's potential innovation in other projects lost because the total pool of potential revenue has been reduced based on false pretenses.
More people need to realize their own choices have an effect in aggregate. The "it's my money, I can spend it how I like crowd" is right, it is their money and they can spend it how they like.... But if they're going to share the fact that they spent it, they cannot demand others avoid judging them based on their choices.
I dont really have a huge amount of sympathy for people who gave this scammer their money, even a cursory google search would have shown Walsh as a incompetent who lacked the capacity to deliver.
No pitty or mercy when it comes to idiots that hand anyone hundreds or thousands of dollars in one go for a simple promise on paper thats not legally binding.
Now, if the donation were somehow legally binding, that would be far more okay. Like some kind of partial ownership, or something.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
But yeah, at this point the CoE thing is drama to be digested, no actual game could ever truly come to life anyway as the funding(or lack of it) was seen as a major issue among those who have followed it's development closely- as in, even the kickstarter funding would have never been enough to build the game that was promise- not even by a mile.
I always found this video by Salt Factory to be really insightful and it really points out just how real the cost is for building a commercial mmorpg.

This is an interesting reaction to Walsh's tantrum 2 days ago about how this site covered the end of the Lawsuit. Below is what Walsh posted 2 days ago. I do not think this is what Walsh was expecting if he did what he said and reached out to Bradford directly to protest:
I was recently made aware of MMORPG.com's coverage of our latest blog post. I've included an image of the header here so you can see the obvious clickbait for yourselves.

I'm going to reach out to Joseph Bradford directly tomorrow, but atypically, I wanted to take a moment here, within the community, to let you know that we're not going to allow such an article to go without a response anymore.
Whether it's through MMORPG.com, or directly on our website, we'll be addressing this article.
There's an often misattributed quote that says, "A lie can travel half-way around the world while the Truth is still putting on its shoes."
That's certainly been my experience over the last two years. But here's the thing, the Truth has its boots on now and it's ready to start kicking. (edited)
PS: @StevenWeber@lotrlore If you want to interview him for a fair and balanced take I volunteer to ask questions. I have a looooong list!

Money talks. Maybe this guy should cough up the cash like the Koreans do to get a nice Sponsored article that simps over him and his game; for now he can shut the heck up.
I'm just wondering if he ever reached out to @lotrlore or @StevenWeber like he said he was going to do and if we have an actual Q&A coming soon.
Maybe it could be done on a livestream. How epic would that be? Let Walsh actually put all the doubters to rest!
Since it's been mentioned a few times, I'll confirm what Steven guessed over the weekend: we've not been contacted by Walsh since our news coverage last week went live, at least as of now.
As far as if an interview is coming, we're always willing, but won't be doing an email or staged PR interview. I said to my team the last time we did one during the announcement of KoE that I was unhappy with the fact that we couldn't ask follow-ups or clarification due to the format of our last one (their Pr doing their job there, no hard feelings), but if we ever do an interview again it'll be on our terms fully. As much as I wanted to have a bit more control over the last interview, I wanted to ensure we at least had coverage more (SEO is a bitch). A mistake with this title that won't be replicated.
With most other companies we do interviews via Zoom or Teams calls. Unless the team's first language isn't English, I tend to want us to pick the phone more than fire off an email. Sometimes, though, the latter is the only option. In this instance, I'm not interested in that. If we do one, there will be plenty of notice because, at the end of the day, as much as we want our questions answered, we also want the community who poured money and energy into this project to have a chance to ask questions and have them answered. So we'll definitely be making a forum/social post to effectively gather community questions.
That being said, I'm not really in a rush. This article wasn't in response to Walsh's statement on Discord (which I saw that night and then went on with my day). Steven had this planned already and it was going to go live regardless of whether we were contacted.

Perfect response. Literally perfect.
And if Mr Walsh didn't contact you after he literally said "I'm going to reach out to Joseph Bradford directly tomorrow" I think that speaks volumes. And for the record he said that on the 13th. Its about to hit the 18th. So maybe he has a different definition of "tomorrow". Or maybe his dog ate the email he was typing.
Thanks for the update.

Greetings sleuthy MMORPGer!
Thanks for summoning me! While I don't have direct access to our EIC's mailbox I do not think he was contacted by Walsh since that article went live. Of course, this piece is simply my opinion. Our news coverage attempts to be unbiased to the best of our ability, though I know all of our forum-friends here may feel that statement can be, at times, inaccurate.
I can say that we love the insight our community brings to the articles and games we cover. I'm fortunate that the MMOWTF column allows me to express my knee jerk reactions away from the more unbiased news I attempt to achieve - so in the event any developer wishes to address any of our coverage, the staff here is willing and capable to do so professionally. *straightens bow-tie*
That being said, if that comes to pass we would love our community to be involved in having their own questions answered. Feel free to talk about them at length in the forums. We do read them!
Happy posting!
Professionally, it's pretty much expected than any opinion piece be labeled as such. It is even categorized as an announcement.
A clickbait title that's borderline defamatory and a "but it's my opinion" copout doesn't really cut it. If games "Journalists" want to be viewed in any legitimate fashion, they need to hold themselves to the same standards that those who report on more serious topics do (and this is actually a serious topic, so it deserves more than your opinion).
You don't get to attempt to achieve an unbiased view on a topic when you're a reporter. You either do it, or you STFU and let someone else do it for you.
As for the kickstarters... I laugh at anyone who invests in these. They're sketch at best and scammy at worst - particularly when it comes to MMORPGs.
Games like Pantheon have cited Release Goals as far back as 2017/18 when they were clawing money from people, and we're here - almost 2023 and the game is still in a never-ending pre-alpha. When will people learn? The more money you give these kick starters, the further down the road the can is kicked.
Have some self-respect and invest your hard earned money into something that will give you a return.
One thing Jeremy can't answer for but is his doing, is that I have seen posters on here and elsewhere turn against the whole idea of CF MMOs after he closed down/misspoke/restarted. They often mention SotA and so on, but it was that event which pivoted them against the whole idea of CF MMOs.
My own stance is it put a bigger question mark over every CF MMO in development, but I already put a question mark over them, as I am a "one in the hand rather than two in the bush" sort. I don't think it was a coincidence that over the following six-month period most of the well-known CF MMOs had announced some sort of alpha, the fan base was running scared.
No one can stop a sucker from sending their money somewhere, but I hope that this piece adds even more momentum to the MMORPG development and gaming "community" to make Walsh a rejected pariah and his future prospects bleak.

Chris Roberts is still doing okay regardless, okay his 'word' doesn't have anywhere near the weight it used to, so i guess we shall see.

Not a fan of how Star Citizen (and SQ42) have been developed but one thing I have to give Chris is that he raised most of his money AFTER letting people try what he has created for free. So people can actually see and play the game as it exists. CoE was the opposite. Always promises about ridiculously complex systems and concept stuff.

SC has a much more open approach to development than CoE ever had. SC has its fair share of complex systems and concepts, too. Only Roberts appears to be openly attempting to do something about them; Caspian not so much. While both projects share cult-like followings, CoE never did anything but focus on the ideas, never delivering anything.
As much as I dislike SC and some of its concepts (and especially its 'loose' development strategy), at least they are trying to do something. Maybe they will succeed, maybe not. Whatever the final result, it's not likely to be in my lifetime. There is no chance of CoE delivering anything.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
Ungoods got like a repeated record of being banned and unbanned wtf he do this time, hopefully he can come back again.
I agree. I disagree with 95% of what he posts, but it's a better place with him around. Also, I have never seen him return fire and try to ban someone and folks have crossed the line with him as well.
If I want to be surrounded by people that just agree with me I'll just go start a Crowdfunding cult/game.

Disagreements on a topic is certainly fine and natural. That element can be a benefit for differing perspectives, or even informational if it's a less subjective topic.
Ad hominem and tangents based on lying to and about people is rather past that. Sometimes things might get heated and it's still ok, but other times it turns into multiple pages of poor behavior that spirals brazenly out of hand. At some point it stops being a benefit to any place.
If I were to turn my argument away from the subject or technical elements, without having provable cause to address another issue, I would hope people call that out too.
As to the main topic, I could lambast people for investing in something that I never could build any confidence in, but I also don't expect everyone to think about or scrutinize the same things. Much less for most people to read the fine print.
That does not excuse or enable retribution against someone who has made their personal case relatively tight. It is still on the individual to understand what they sign up for or give money to.
I do, however, hope that it is a learning experience not just for those involved, but others observing it from the outside. CoE is unlikely to ever be a success even if it does materialize because Walsh and his cohorts have spent all of the goodwill they could have garnered already. Can't write off him/them moving on to a new project and sweeping a good chunk of issues under the rug.
Individual problems in the gaming industry only have as much focus as it takes for a goldfish to change it's attention.
The site has an ignore feature, and I will go to my grave screaming that it's a better option than report/banning. Our small community dwindles and dwindles. Someone might "win" an argument via ban, but in the end, we all get a step closer to losing the war.
Interesting that Walsh made such a big post about what he was going to do the very next day, and then apparently never followed up with this site. Did he think nobody would notice?

Not sure anyone wins an argument via ban, especially if it's only done if/when any argument of merit has been long buried. That's rather (or should be) a nuclear option regarding inherently negative behavior, and hopefully timed as a manner to force individual to reflect. Permanence should only be a thing if it's a repeat pattern of failed reflection and repeated negative value.
Ignoring is a mixed bag. It solves direct antagonism, but also creates holes in discussion and in what it means is ok as far as behavior goes. Someone trash-talking another, or posting misinformation willy-nilly, just because they're muted by anyone who would contest it ends up not really helping anything for other readers.
Also, did Walsh's post mention showing tangible results?
Honestly, I always liked the sound of this game but never backed it.
I always expected it to flop even when it did launch. It was WAY too niche to compete in the modern MMO market. The fact it ended up vapor ware before it ever launched was surprising but the writing had been on the wall for a while.
The updates that came out started on the various aspects of the game, development, and how the project was doing but over time the content updates became more sporadic and instead switched to increasingly desperate ways to raise money.
That was like 4-5 years ago, before it devolved completely into a money grab and increasingly crackpot schemes to salvage a project that had been underwater for years.
Project management is HARD and usually the dreamers and big idea guys are notoriously bad at it.
