You know how Star Wars Galaxies had Jedi that you had to work really hard to get? I'd like to try and find a game where you had to work really hard to unlock something like that. Does anyone know of any?
In CoH, you need to get 50 before you can unlock either the Peacebringer or Warshade archetypes. Maybe not everyone's definition of elite, but it's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

In FFXI only six jobs are available at the beginning: Warrior, Thief, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage. The other twelve require you to reach level 30 and complete the quest to unlock for that particular job (and three of those jobs also require you to have the new expansion). Not terribly elite, particularly as most of the quests are not that tough (Samurai is probably the toughest to unlock--I haven't done it yet myself). It's definitely not any really big thing to have unlocked them all.
I tried FFXI on Xbox 360, but I found the spawns were very fought over, and everything seemed tedious and boring. XP was hard to come by too, and grouping was basically forced.

Ok, many games are or were like that. Of the top of my head, Lineage 2 or EverQuest 2, you just get them as you level, like in City of Heroes. As soon as you hit the end level you get it, do not need to work for it. SWG was completely different, there was a pattern to do it, not everyone at the end were going to get it.
So I have suggestion for you but if you ever get an answer I would like to know.
Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!
In the game Astonia III, you get the chance to raise Profession Points. These can be used to train professions at the academy. There are 10 professions that take a different number of Profession Points. The maximum number of Profession Points each character may have is 100. So you can only have 2-4 Professions depending on which combination. You can be an Alchemist to get the ability to shake potions that raise your stats for a certain time; however, it takes 50 profession points. Or you can be Dark Warrior, Light Warrior, or Clan Warrior. Each of these costs 30 Profession Points. Dark Warriors get a bonus at night time (game time - days are 2 real life hours with 1 hour for day, and 1 hour for night). Light Warriors get a bonus at day time. Clan Warriors get a large bonus, but it's only in Clan Areas (such as spawns). Master Trader gives you a discount when buying supplies at shops. Miner gets you more Gold/Silver while you mine in the mines. You get the point... It is really hard to get 100 PPs. You need to be about level 90 before you can get maxed professions.
Also, there is a special class you can achieve. You can seyan at about level 30, which makes you start over with more abilities.
Well what I mean is like the Jedi was in SWG, you had to unlock it with ALOT of hard work and mindless grinding. A profession better than all the others that you had to earn.
The Hero system in Lineage 2 maybe, that includes alot of grinding and hard work. First you have to lvl up two different classes to 75 to become a nobless (sp?) and then enter a pvp tournament against other noblesses to finally become a Hero.

I hope that's what you mean...

I don't think any games have an aplha class.
