EvE, LotRO, Steam backlog. Currently enjoying my Evoker in WoW.

    Happy Thanksgiving, ya filthy animals!

Is your Steam backlog like mine, where no matter how many games you play it only gets larger each month?

Is that a "thing" for thanksgiving, are you all filthy animals?

I am just going to mention one game that I came to very late: Children of Moria. After the Steam Autumn sale, I find I have over thirty games I have not played in my library, which is why I keep coming to games so very late! :)

Smite was probably my most consistent game while I bounced around a bit.

Elden Ring is my "slowly but surely" pick. Absolutely love it.

Elden Ring was THE experience of 2022. But it lasted about a month or so.

Anyways, I did not have A game during 2022 that I played consistently.
    - But I went back to BDO for usual 3 months before getting bored of it.
    - Same for Skyrim.
    - I played a significant bit of PSO2:NGS as well.
    - Special mention to Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters which is the game I wish I had when I was 15. I didnot finish but really enjoyed my time playing it. The coming free DLC might put me back on the saddle(the dreadnought looks awesome)

    - I may start again BnS. It never really sticked to me(my strongest char is level 17). But the UE4 conversion makes me curious.
    - NW did not seduce me. The world is beautiful but the avatars move and fight like rusted sticks. Sad because for $20 B2P, this is hands down the best deal of the year.

I am scared to fall in this rabbit hole again. Excellent game. I did not touch it since a few years now...

New World is definitely my game of 2022.

And Brimstone Sands is a free content addition the size of a paid for DLC in most other games.

I played quite a few other nice games like Dune: Spice Wars though.
Oh, and I finished good old "Quake" again ;)

I'd call that "playful" rather than "productive" ;)

I just kind of fell back into it cause its just match relevant, no grinding/etc, so it was easy for me to pick up and put down whenever I wanted at the times I played.

VRChat was the only game that was consistently fun to experience for me in 2022. Nothing else comes even close to that. Each time I tried to go back to any of currently popular "dungeon grind simulators" - I could only last few days until becoming utterly bored by gameplay, and while there's plenty of socialization going on in many exiting MMORPGs - none of them can match the social experience that VRChat provides.

There haven't been many games that have really grabbed my attention this year. I ended up playing a lot of early access games simply because I couldnt find worthwhile finished games. Most weren't really up to scratch, but they've got potential so I hope they'll be good by the time they're fully released.

The game that sticks in my mind most is Timberborn.

Timberborn is a city-builder, except that your society is made up of beavers! There is a lot of water-management involved which is fun. The maps start out looking like a wasteland, but by the time you've finished you've terraformed and irrigated it into a green paradise. There is also vertical building (i.e. you can build buildings on top of one another) which opens up interesting ways of designing your city. You can build wooden skyscrapers for your beavers!

There are a few annoying mechanics, for example "districts". You arent building one big city, you're building lots of separate small districts of 80-150 beavers each. This means there is a lot of duplication to make sure your new district can feed itself, plus some annoying trading between districts. Its also built on a grid (like most city builders to be fair) which dramatically reduces creativity.

Another game which stands out for me is Divinity: Original Sin 1 EE

Obviously not a new game but I only played it this year. I usually dont enjoy CRPGs but this one was good. I originally bought the game for my brother years ago but he never played it. He is recently disabled and can't really do much anymore except watch TV and play games, so we decided to give it a go. The slow, turn-based combat suited my brother perfectly as it meant his reduced mobility didn't matter.

From my point of view, I loved the massive selection of skills each character had! Most of the skills were quite impactful too, making the combat mechanics deeper than anything I've experienced in the single player world for a looooonnggg time.

Only real downside to the game was a lack of respawning enemies. My brother and I enjoyed the combat so much we were constantly looking for fights, but without respawns there just weren't enough.

Probably gonna get D:OS2 in the near future!

I played the Timberborn demo (when it was out) and enjoyed the heck out of it.  Building a beaver city is such a unique concept.  However, I found it ironic that the beavers couldn't swim.

    Elden Ring - genre defining

Immortality - My first FMV ever and crucial in the ‘games as an art form’ debate

    Vampire Survivors - Pixel crack

Plague Tale 2 - So THAT is what next gen looks like. Also makes Hellblade look kind of tame in comparison

Those are the ones that made the most impression. Just started SteelRising which might make it if they can keep ramping it up the further I get.

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'

Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'
