imageOpinion: Camelot Unchained's Launch Hype is Dividing Its Fans | MMORPG.com

Camelot Unchained is meant to be the spiritual successor of Mark Jacobs' Dark Age of Camelot and seeks to become one of the newest PvP-focused MMORPGs on the block. However, the development has been maligned by delays, the announcement of a new game, and more. And some of these issues, according to Kanishka, has divided its fanbase.

Launch hype?  Camelot Unchained has launch hype?  Camelot Unchained has a launch at all in the foreseeable future?  Did I miss that news?  Don't you have to have an actual or at least impeding launch in order to have launch hype?

As others mentioned I feel like I missed an important bit of news: a CU launch date or even window. Have they even committed to a year? I don't see how there's any launch hype for a game that hasn't announced a launch. I've totally given up on this game seeing the light of day. My hype is non-existent.

I think the correct title would have been "Camelot Unchained's Development History is dividing fans."

I clicked on this article expecting them to have announced a release date and I was going to be shocked.

I mean Pantheon shows more then Camelot Unchained does. heck, I think every kickstarter MMO save for CoE shows off more then Camelot Unchained

This is one of very few kickstarters I funded. Well I believe I took part in 3, but my memory is kind of meh these days. Anyway I looked at it as probably wasted money up front and that I waste more than that amount of even dumber things.

Oh and to be honest I really don't follow the updates at all. Beyond maybe scanning one of the money emails they seem to send out. Wouldn't even entertain the idea of asking for a refund... I knew what I was getting into.

Although there is very little chance I'll back a fourth project at this point.

DAoC would probably still have decent numbers on their classic cluster if it still existed... lots of stupid choices regardless of owner.

I do not think there is much 'hype' anymore for Camelot Unchained.  Now it's like that one toe that seems to be the only one that ever gets stubbed.  You forget about it until you hit it again and then you remember that it's the one.  You don't remember Camelot Unchained until a story comes out, and then you remember and not in a good way.

What a weird and misleading title. How can you call any of this "launch hype" without a launch date?

I back CU in the initial kickstarter. I have not asked for a refund but I am not a fan boy. I am really disappointed in MJ and team. I think I will get out of this what I got out if crowfall. I really wanted crowfall to be the next shadowbane one of my favorite MMOs. It was t but I felt like I gt my $20 worth but not the worth of the hope and emotional investment. At least I no longer feel any emotional investment with CU. I will lay for a month and get my $20 worth. I won't have the experience of being in one of the first parties stepping into Emain Macha, but I know that and and I am now ok with that. Just let me know when it releases, stop talking about it otherwise.

I backed this on day one of the kickstarter, and worse than the mountain of delays, which suck, is the complete radio silence from Jacobs over the past year or better.

Backers gave him 2 million plus, and because he gets grief from some backers, he hides even from those looking for information on the CU boards.

This from the guy who promised transparency. This whole project just turned into one big ball of mess.

One of the 4 kickstarter's I have backed. And the one I regret backing the most. The best result of Kickstarter for me was Grim Dawn which turned into either the best or second best AARPG ever made and the dev's crafted an amazing game and kept supporting it for close to 10 years. Last Epoch was another, though I forgot I backed it and bought it again on Steam lol. That definitely produced a playable and somewhat good game. Sadly they recently reneged on promises they made on the Kickstarter in regards to open trading. But they did produce a decent overall game that "released". Last KS that produced a product that released was Crowfall. I never had high hopes on that and it was an utter failure. But at least it produced something however short lived.

Then we have CU. I backed it what over 10 years ago at this point. They had a more playable product within days of launching the KS then they have now 10+ years later. DAOC was one of the best MMO's ever created. it was created by a small team, including Jacobs, for less than 5 million and in 3 years if I remember correct. How is the hell in this day and age, with 3-4 times the funding and 3-4 times the development time, can a game take this long and never produce anything. One word scam. Maybe it didn't set out like that but if someone just reads the bullet point timeline from KS creation to now, how can any other conclusion be reached? Mark Jacobs is a piece of shit, and its a shame to say that since I liked the guy prior. But every step he has made with this "game" has been nothing more than spitting in the face of the people who believed in him and the possibility of this game.

Oh and Pantheon is far more playable and has a far better directions with far more communication with its base. That game was truly indie despite McQuaid's involvement. I believe that will launch far sooner than CU ever does, and be far better than CU if CU ever launches, and have it be done with far less money.

MMORPG.com's clickbait title is dividing its userbase

Absolutely no idea what prompted this article to be written and the author clearly isn't aware of recent developments including MJ's live stream confirming $15M in new funding, several key new hires nor the big focus on engine development and the controversy around it including news it's designer left CSE to take a contract job at Meta.

Bottom line, studio nearly went broke, development slowed to a crawl, no evidence of refunds being paid with any regularity.

This site should be embarrassed for publishing this article today.

Sure but should new funding really not acquaint to an article like this. Does it change anything.

Pantheon for instance hasn't gotten 15mil but it got 3 million dollars in funding, as also hired new key hires, and also has been focusing on engine development as they are building there own from scratch. Heck everything you wrote could be copy and pasted onto a Pantheon comment section.

    I guess except for refunds

Doesn't mean that if MMORPG wrote an article like this for that game it would be wrong.

I would expect a Pantheon article to cover current events, not be generically vague about a divided fan base (CU has very few fans to speak of these days) and 3 months out of date.

So whats the chance of either of these two games coming out then, or is this effectively another CoE without them admitting then denying it?

I guess the main difference is that CU is a failure and CoE is a scam. The former has a, somewhat, playable product that is severely lacking while the latter has never shown an actual product, and what was shown later differed so much from what was initially shown while funding that there is no relationship whatsoever between pitch and reality.

Mind, CU could still turn into a scam if they know it will never properly materialize and keep plugging it as ‘soon.’ Right now it is just really bad. …. Or so I have heard, NDA and all……  o:)
