Should developers stop thinking about trying to reinvent the wheel, and instead just update the games that players have loved for years? Should MMORPGs always blaze new trails? You decide in this week's OGR.

Remakes no but should we get sequels that upgrade to a new engine, upgrade the graphics, is a fresh start for new players, and could make great QoL improvements sure

The reason why franchises exist is that the original game was that good, no reason why MMORPG's can't do the same. So when is a remake a sequel? I would not suggest a remake unless the game is really old like WoW; I would suggest a sequel for an great MMO that's been out for ten years.

But if you are going to do sequels do you need remakes? Depends on how great the sequel is, FFXIV eventually became a worthy successor, EQ 2 and AC 2 never really reached the originals heights, though I was a fan of both those sequels.

So remake or sequel, well if it is going to be a remake do it similar to the PSO2 way, nothing would divide a player base more than having to play a wallop of dosh to play the same game again with souped up graphics. Should characters retain anything from the old game, that's an open question, you could play it many different ways but if you retain nothing and pay full price I don't see it being an old fans favourite.

Darker Ages of Camelot (with RTX darker darks and lighter lights ;) ) here I come!

I would like to see some of the best systems from old MMO's put into 1 game with a graphics update and some QOL increases (not auto easy mode).  Have PVE, PVP light, PVP hardcore servers.

    Profit!

Its going to need to be a different world than past games, I dont want to redo the exact game like WoW classic.

Honestly I wouldn't be mad if WoW relaunched like this.

Until new technology is created for world building and A.I. management it will not really matter.

Reskin or remaster is still the same games built around outdated technology development.

World building and A.I. technology need to advance a decade or two before any real movement can be made to further the genre along.

My big issue for some time now has been that no companies appear to be pursuing AI *in context of MMORPGs*.  The odd examples of positive exploration into AI have been more things like EQ:N trying to factor in 'off-the-shelf' tools like StoryBricks; incorporating other AI tools into their product.  There's been no (outwardly visible) effort to develop or advance AI for the industry.

I expect the industry doesn't really understand what it could do for them, or how they should employ the technology.  They are still in the 'all they see is costs' stages.

Well yeah, a big chunk of that cost is to the performance of the game.

You don't have to just have an AI tapping into a bunch of data sets to ping pong info back and forth across a web page, which allows for asynchronous communication between a user and an AI. You have to be doing it concurrently for all the people in an MMO, in real time.

It was part of the hurdles in EQ:N trying to integrate storybricks and the world voxelization system into a coherent real time space shared by so many people at once. It's part of why technology in MMOs perpetually lags behind it's non-mmo counterparts.

That said, yes it also makes many studios gun-shy about being the ones to invest the time and money to develop the innovations necessary. When it can be done in a stepwise manner that's great, but "new" presents a bigger hurdle to handle.

We need the TopGun:Maverick equivalent for an old school MMORPG.

    They didn't just reskin it.
    They didn't change it's core.

They let us revisit that world. 30 years later.

They used the latest SFX tools and camera/sound improvements but at it's center, it was very much Top Gun.

It blew projections out of the water and made boatloads of money.

That's what we need. A new MMORPG that uses all of the improvements from today, but stays true to the essence of it's IP.

From all the armchair producers and developers on this site who pine away for the good old days, and have no shortage of reasons why modern games fail, I'd say remakes of the classic games with updated graphics engines would be the way to go. I mean nevermind that none of those games came close to the number of players of WoW even in it's current population levels or FFXIV or ESO. Clearly the way to success is corpse runs, single instanced shared dungeons, no quest markers, no map, endless mob grinding to level, and everything past the newbie area requires a group but without any sort of group finder. You must sit on the side of the zone and spam the LFG channel in hopes of some group having an opening. That all was such a blast. I miss those days like I miss having oral surgery.

Both in reality, if we just stuck to remakes, there would be no new features that may be the next big things, and give that lost feeling of calling sick for work and not sleeping for nights!

I would like to see remakes/relaunch for Vanguard SOH, as it was ahead of its time, and RIFT with its endless customisation and features that are practically a requirement in most now.

I would love to see original Star Wars Galaxies remade with modern engine/graphics, using the original ruleset (pre-NGE) with necessary improvements. I heard so many stories about how the original SWG was a great sandbox, but never got to play it.

Nothing is needed. Everything is wanted.

Developers should focus on creating what they want to. Players would do well to find and enjoy that created which best suits their tastes.

    Is that a serious question?

We should just play "Pong" in UE5 and be done with video-gaming /s

Maybe not in gaming, but what about movies, remakes seem to work quite well, two franchises in particular come to mind.

    Spiderman
    Batman

I'm not sure anyone has really tried to do a proper remake of an original MMORPG, perhaps the Fantasy Star example, I've never played them.

Some movie remakes work well. Some are a disaster.

Is not Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn essentially a remake?

The movie was just Star Wars: Episode 4 with the death star run if it focused on training the people who did it.

Now that I type that, I guess that is basicaly what you are talking about. Both those stories work extremally well. Maverick may have borrowed heavily. I would argue as much as Avatar but I guess if it aint broke don't fix it.

Imagine if WoW 2 came out. One of three things would happen. 1- the current WoW players would try it, not like the new mechanics/story/etc, and would go back to WoW. 2- the current WoW players would try it and love it. A mass exodus from WoW would leave it an empty shell. 3- the playerbase would be split between the 2 games, leaving Blizzard with higher production costs and no additional revenue.

None of those scenarios work for the developer. I guess there's a 4th option where enough new/returning players come to WoW 2 that Blizzard makes even more money, but then they would abandon WoW because it wasn't profitable enough. There's never enough profit.

Sequels in movies and single player games work well because they aren't really competing with the original content. That isn't the case with MMOs.

I think the best thing is to end the story or leave it with a cliffhanger. Like the original FFXIV did with Realm Reborn. Then you just turn the MMO off. I mean if WoW announced a WoW 2 for 2025 and said that was the plan how many people would legit be upset. WoW is over a decade old.

They operate WoW and Classic WoW concurrently. Who is to say they can't do the same should WoW 2 come out.

Active development could shift to WoW 2, with that current being maintained as Neoclassic WoW along with Classic WoW for those that prefer them.

It would just be another step on a path they've already taken.
