There's Something Awesome about Maegu (and a Criticism on Gear Progression) | MMORPG.com
Maegu released on Black Desert Online, and Lowry is a fan. Like, majorly so. Check out their thoughts, as well as some criticism on gear progression in BDO.
Gear progression was why I left BDO, if it was not for that I might still be playing it.
I used to have a problem with BDO's upgrade system (the RNG aspect), but that's essentially a relic at this point. Mostly, it's best to just grind the silver to buy whatever you want and/or use cron stones to prevent items from failing.
However, it is still a little boring to spend billions of silver to see stats go up by 1 point at a time.

That's what I did. Every time they gave something away, I would sell it. I figured that I'd just play the way I wanted to and let the money take care of itself. Albeit a bit slowly.
To that point, I wonder how much in game money people spend to upgrade their equipment only to have it fail? It seems like you're better off just buying what others sell.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Definitely. If I get accessories from boxes, I just sell them. I convert free outfits to cron stones and upgrade PEN armor to sell, or I use it to try to enhance Blackstar gear. I never do unprotected upgrades anymore.

Unprotected upgrades in this game is like unprotected sex, its gonna cost you a lot of money.
I love and hate this game. The enchant system is one of the worst I've ever seen in my life. But... the game's PvE combat is SUPERB. Also, the developers have improved the game considerably over the past 2 years. They are listening to the players. I hope they keep it up, they're on the right track!

But come on... that's just.. meh. That's like you're just ignoring the horrible gearing system with a stopgap measure, when the real problem is that the devs should just swallow their pride, admit their gearing system sucks, and overhaul it. BDO could be one of the top 3 MMOs out there, if everyone didn't universally hate the rng upgrade system. They should just fix it, so that we can all come back and give the game another go.

That's the problem it is a work around for a bad system. It also leads to P2W as players buy things to sell on, or they did when I was playing.

Well, IMO yes and no. I usually play BDO in sessions of 1 to 3 months in a row per year. Can't do more. While the player's animations are usually beautiful, the grind literally spits at your face: "BOOOOOOOOring !" So, it is good as a no-brain-game. And sometimes, tired, coming back from work, I just need and enjoy the stupid hypnotic flashiness of BDO.
Otherwise, I play something more involving and thus more entertaining.

They have made it much easier. Can get PEN items thru quests instead of RNG. Gearing up is massively different than it used to be.
That is interesting has the ceiling not been raised somehow to make up for that? What I mean is has some sort of system been introduced that replaces the randomness of gear grind? Sorry to be so cynical, I have been playing MMOs too long.
Yeah they make the former tier easier while introducing a new tier. It's BDO 101.
Pen is still the best so no new tier
I have not played BDO for a long time but isn't it something they can change the percentages without revealing it.
Diablo Immortal had some nefarious hidden percentages that were at 0.3 or 0.5 or something of a chance which was totally undecipherable until youtubers spent money and did a lot of research and pointed out on their videos. I mean even if they make it easier to get the pen items if they reduce the chances at the top end after they introduce these easier methods of obtaining pen items wouldn't that make it just as hard in the end.
This is why I completely abhor these equipment upgrade systems and never participated in it at those high levels in BDO. I dropped the game before I got caught up in it. Same with Archeage and Lost Ark.

Really? There is not some sort of advancement system or bonuses or buffs or something that has to be grinded beyond Pen? Not necessity with armour or weapons, something that buffs "stats", or "skills". I am astonished as you have probably guessed, how long does it take to do a Pen quest run?

They've added a 'caphras' system to boss gear. Once you hit PEN you can feed them caphras stones up to +20 which adds additional AP, DP and/or accuracy. There's no RNG element though, it's a pure silver sink. For the Helmet and Armor, once you get them to +10 you can convert them to the new Fallen God armor or continue to caphras.
Alternatively, there are Black Star and Godr Ayed weapon paths, which at PEN will have the same stats as a +20 caphras PEN Boss weapon. Those have an incredibly low chance to upgrade, but are essentially an alternative way for people who still like to gamble vs just adding caphras stones.

That does sound a fairer system, so I give them credit where it is due!
