Last time a LOTRO game was announced it was later announced to be cancelled (I think?), so I guess we'll be waiting and seeing until they release. "This means we could be seeing some Middle-earth-themed mobile titles or PC and console games. It simply remains to be seen." Hopefully that doesn't mean most will be mobile.....

The one cancelled was because Amazon and Tencent (that had just bought Leyou - who owned the license to make a game) couldn't come to terms that would have allowed Amazon (who was going to publish the game) to continue to work on it.

And while Amazon / the Media made a big fuss the game was cancelled, nothing was said by Leyou or Tencent on the games status and they're the only one's that could cancel it, not Amazon.
With these unannouced games it's all under one companies control so there's a better chance that these will get made. Only problem I see if milking the IP with competing titles.

At least the 2 we know about; an SPG and a Survival game, don't compete with the current mmo.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

Hoping one of those is a remastered collection of the PS2 hack and slash games.

    Or the Third Age JRPG.

LoTR is one of the best IPs out there really....An incredibly vast world with so much lore and potential...Now go make us a great world that is fun to explore and quit making these themeparks on rails.....Also make more races other than the 4 "good" races...let us play Orcs, Ogres, Trolls, etc...That is what makes games fun.....variety.

I will be the only one realistic here and say it.

I wish Embracer group would invest more funding intro LOTRO and SSG and allow them to expand their team so they can improve and modernize the game at a faster rate so that it leaves its place as a niche MMORPG for Tolkien nerds and becomes something more mainstream like FF14, WoW, ESO, GW2, RuneScape that gets talked about more and more people are willing to give a try.

Alternatively, I wish one of those LOTR games is some single player RPG (with maybe some limited multiplayer capability or dedicated servers) that plays like The Elder Scrolls games where you can create your character, pick race, gender, appearance, class (or maybe be a classless game where you can be whatever you want) and have a vast open world with some level of randomly generated things to enhance replay value. This will be a game that I would love to play - like a LOTRO, but offline, meaning as long as you own the game, you can play it even 50-100 years from now and you don't have to rely on some servers to be able to play or not.

It's like most gamers don't have a clue how business works nor how to make big money in gaming.

One and done sales models is not the way, just saying.

I'm pretty sure the Embracer group doesn't own SSG.  The last I heard was Daybreak, who owned SSG, was sold to Enad Global 7.

Embracer gets fees from SSG in a preexisting license that hasn't expired.  Assuming that license isn't exclusive, Embracer could start making their own Middle EArth MMO but the mrket is so niche and saturated I doubt they would.

    Correct.
    - Embracer has Gearbox (with PWE folded into it) and Cyptic among others.
    - EG7 has Daybreak among others.

It's not so much that we don't have a clue as it is that we're personally not interested in the total fucking guff they're putting out.

There's a huge unanswered question about the ability of the SSG remaining staff to actually build their own game.  Maintain one, sure.  They would also need someone (EG7) to throw stacks of money at them, and someone would have to deal with the Tolkien licensing mess (again).

    So, probably not.
