imagePath of Exile - The Re-Review | MMORPG.com

Path of Exile, Grinding Gear Games' free-to-play MMOARPG is pushing ten years old this year. We took the ARPG for a spin, re-review style to see if, ten years on, it still holds up and provides a truly great ARPG experience.

The gearing system honestly prevents me from wanting to participate in their leagues. Trying to get the right links on the right pieces of gear is only 'fun' once for me. Other than that, a really amazing game.

It's built around trade and most times it's far cheaper to get those links and stats from trading.

I really wish they would put more time into the true xpac coming and less into the leagues. Most players are burned out of running the campaign at this point. The sooner they launch the xpac the sooner I will go back to playing. I just can't do or want another league at this point.

A lot of people myself included only play ARPG's as solo player games so I can understand them not wanting to play because of gear. I can't stand trading in ARPG's and having to whisper people hoping they respond.

They really should have put a real auction house into the game if they want people trading, I mean they didn't add anything with trading officially till just a couple years back. They were relying on people outside the game to host sites for it.

Especially since 'currencies' can get a little overwhelming for a more casual player.

"Currencies" only exits to fill up your inventory and force you to the cash shop to buy the currency inventory tabs. Same thing with the multitude of crafting materials. The game is so unnecessarily complicated for the purpose of getting you to pay when they could have just made the game simpler and charged a $40 box price and saved the headaches.

That being said I actually own said currency and crafting tabs, so don't think I'm too cheap to support the game.

I primarily don't like it because your ability and all the mutators for them are drops.  I have to go hit poe.trade to buy the gems I need for my build.  How about kiss my ass? I'll go play Last Epoch instead.

POE is possibly the greatest video game ever made. The amount of flexibility it offers in builds and hooks to keep you grinding are unparalleled anywhere. New leagues offer a solid month of fun 4 times a year. I've sunk 2k hours into POE without even realizing it.

As for lack of tutorial mentioned multiple times in the review, at this point I think it's intentional because part of POE is learning things from multiple outside sources, either guides, videos, streamers or tinkering on your own using the build emulator "Path of Building". The game is so intricate that if they even began to try to explain everything, they would overload most new players.

The curious that stay despite the lack of direction are rewarded with a game that is always there and always good.

An AH would have ruined the game imo.  The obstacles to getting the items you want does an amazing job of limiting the number of trades that occur.  And you can easily reach yellow maps without a single trade.  Although I start trading when I finish the campaign.

While GGG could make some things more convenient, such as currency conversion and trading maps,  I'd say their huge success is due to their design decisions that cater to the more dedicated players.  Once it gets too casual and easy to get upgrades, players get bored.

I really cannot accept dying to lag and losing experience I worked two days to get. I ended my run to level 90 when this happened again and again. They need to fix this and it is especially bad when the league is on and it affects the normal servers too.

oof. Why do you pretend to have played Poe? All "ability" and "mutators" (its like you dont know what skill gems and support gems are...) are buyable from vendors from the first town onwards. At engame theres a vendor in your hidehout who sells every basic gem available in the game. You can criticize the game because its certainly not perfect, but get the basic facts straight atleast.

This, so much! I want to like this game so bad but that camera hovering like 3 meters above your character always kills it for me :-/

PoE is not casual player friendly at all. Plus, what's the point of all the possible ways to build your character only to find out that there really is only a handful of GOOD builds to help you get to endgame. If GGG ever comes up with a way to make some more casual players happy, I'll revisit. For now I'm onto other games. Have fun you hardcore junkies. :-)

I could probably handle dying to lag if POE had a proper combat log where I could verify that's what happened.

It was maddening to me to be cruising through a relatively easy map or delve level and just suddenly go "insta-flat" with nary a clue what the heck did me in.

I recall leaving off at level 93 or 94 even after reaching like 94.87 then suffering several die offs in a row back to the .20  mark....walked away for good, never looked back.

PoE does seem immune to my attempts at playing it casually.  Good for maybe a session or two, then back to the 'maybe later' pile.

I was reading this and nodding along with the best ARPG out there and the trading being bothersome along with the currencies being convoluted then I saw this post.

Most people who play path of exiles solo it so idk if this is an mmo the most interaction you have with other players is trading items with them.

Take that with a grain of salt I haven't played in 5+ years might have changed.

What I do know is this scared me from bothering to go back I am to lazy to learn all this

Are you unwilling to use a build guide for a build that looks fun to you?  Because that is a perfectly valid way to learn the game as well.

Once I learned a lot about the game and had a lot of experience playing it, I found myself having more fun planning out my build than actually playing the game.  Probably because of all the aforementioned bullcrap you have to deal with when actually playing the game (currency drops beting so cluttersome and making trade a pain in the butt, the game being easy 99.9% of that time until that 0.1% of the time when it's not and then you're dead with no clue what the hell happened, etc)

Also, they just keep nerfing everything over and over and over again because they love torturing their player base like sadists for their vision of how the game should be played.  I play on Standard where things don't reset every league and over the course of three years my character ended up getting weaker every three months when each new patch hit and I got sick of it.  Not much point in grinding exp and loot  to get stronger if you're just going to end up weaker overtime because the developers doth decreed it every new patch.

Path of Exile: Super cool lore and awesome fun gameplay. Oppressive and shitty itemization. Ruins everything.

Yes, this is beyond horrible too. Given that I'm a part of Hardcore crowd, this is flat unacceptable. The lack of mods probably too, but I will forgive that one.
