    Probably so they can do whatever they're gonna be doing to the game with the move to a 64 bit client which will free them from a ton of memory and data constraints that probably heavily hindered their ability to develop the content they want to develop. Same reasons FFXIV has been upgrading all of these things as well. It will allow for graphical improvements with everything from textures, materials, lighting, and even zone/world design, and allowing them to fill zones with a ton more details and they need server architecture to be able to support those things.

    I beleive windows maybe ending 32 bit support soon.

    Of course not. The cost to move to an entirely new engine would be insane and total waste of money on a slowly dying game.

    This is just simply a cost saving measure.

    No one wants to operate and maintain their own data centers in this day and age, as it's much cheaper to run it in the cloud.

    Now in AWS they can easily scale out or scale down their servers based on demand and only pay for server resources they actually use.
    So it will save them a lot of money on the long run.

    Lumberyard is one of the worst game engines in a while.
    Probably not worse than the highly disreputable Hero Engine, in fact, could be a hell of an improvement ;)

    Hear hear! I had a love/hate relationship with SWTOR for years after it launched until I gave it up for good a couple years ago. I love me some MMO and Star Wars gameplay...hated the Disney cartoon look of the game overall. Worst ugliest character models and faces ever!

    BioWare is currently licensing Unreal engine for pretty much all of their future projects now that EA has ended their in-house engine mandate, so any future SWTOR game they develop will likely be on Unreal Engine. I don't think they will be switching this games engine, but they apparently spent the last couple of years doing extensive upgrades to it. Whether the content we get will be worth playing the game or not is another question lol.

    I agree I would like a new game, but they probably won't totally abandon this game any time soon. It'll probably operate and be supported on some level the same way FFXI had been despite FFXIV existing. I'm hoping one of their unannounced projects is a new MMO sequel to SWTOR, though and chances are one of them is Star Wars related because they met with LucasArts and Disney a while back and the game director said the meetings went great and the future of the Old Republic franchise is looking great so we'll see what they deliver.

    LOL, don't hold your breath. SWG was killed for this POS trash SWTOR. If SWTOR dies, it will be some mobile auto-play gacha trash, if it's even an MMORPG.

    Now they have the money to make anything, they just don't have the talent and the vision, all the old developers that made the greatest games - Morrowind, HoMM3, Baldur's Gate, AoE2, Diablo 2, Vanilla WoW, EQ1, AC1/2, SWG, they are no longer making games, Raph Koster talks for years about something that even he doesn't know what it is so we're left with some outsourced 20 year old intern "developers" from 2nd and 3rd world countries where labor is cheap to make us phone games like Diablo 4, Overwatch and New World.

    Not sure how extensive "extensive" actually is, but the 64bit update gives the engine more wiggle room for updating other stuff down the line.

    Problem is, yeah, that doesn't itself affect game mechanics which is a big sticking point unto itself.

    Yeah, we have to stay realistic here. I could start dreaming about the Class Stories 2.0(Trooper for one would benefit greatly from the 64 bit), but I am aware of the state of Bioware Austin. And of SWTOR in general. It's ... it's gonna be interesting seeing where they go with it.

    The reason why much of New World's backend is done client side (and thus why it has so many gold dupes and exploits) is because Lumberyard can't handle doing everything server side.

    Hero Engine sucked because BioWare tried using the beta version for a full game and then when the full version of Hero Engine was available BioWare had already messed up the beta engine so much that converting it was impossible.
