    The more they automate shit, the lower the price I expect from them.
    Sorry, but 'automation with less actual human development' isn't impressive to me. I'm not keen on the idea of paying for literal non-effort.

    I've played this game off and on for about 20 years, while also playing every MMO to come out and be talked about on MMORPG.com in the meantime. Long time forum junkie/poster here.

    This was really cool to experience in Aetolia and I love that even now, 25-30 years into the MUD experience, that things like this can evolve and be implemented into MUDs. It was very fun to talk back and forth with NPCs on the fly, because usually in these games to get that kind of interaction they have to be actively played by an Admin.

    It's also pretty wild to experience what feels like a crossover event, seeing this game I play regularly featured on this website I also go to regularly.

    Awesome game, very immersive. Highly recommend.

    That's pretty cool. Seems like a fun event for the players. I imagine if they did a temporary event like that in WoW or OSRS, we'd get some funny memes out of it.

    It won't be long before interactive dynamic AI voiced NPCs are a standard feature in MMORPGs.

    TBH one of the first things that popped into my mind when I was playing with AI was how nice it would be for writing room descs for the 100s or 1000s of rooms an area in a MUD can contain. Pretty cool to see I was underselling by a lot.

    I can see ChatGPT being very useful for NPC interaction. Like Virtual Assistants in Mass Effect, you'd get real time and human like feed back within a restricted database of knowledge.

    The effort is in the research and development to produce something that enhances players' experience; an experience that would not be offered if it had to be done by humans due to overwhelming cost.

    I suppose you would rather use a rotary phone where calls were manually connect by women operators, and you had to wait a minute or two to be connected on each call? Not enough effort? Gonna give up your cell phone because it is too much automation?

    I talked about this a couple years ago and a couple "Industry Experts" told me how impossible it was.



    And that is why they keep producing shit...they have no vision.



    I mean, at the time, it probably was.

    Even this article details the cost/challenge of running this more then a day. So even a couple years later, it is cost-prohibitive. That's not counting the cost that's gone in to research and development of AI over the past couple years. Additionally, it still seems to be in a bit of a novelty phase and not sure a couple days really gives an indication of long term viability/fun or quality changes as the model learns.

    Not to defend dinosaurs or those without vision, but I get companies (especially those beholden to shareholders) not jumping on the early adopter train.

    Wow, how cool. I'd love to see AI voiced NPCs in all kinds of games. I just hope this isn't some small flash in the pan step forward that will sit and stagnate for another decade before seeing wider adoption.

    For me, it's not the amount of people who work on a project.  It's the quality of the product.  If the quality of the product is good, I'm happy to pay a reasonable price.  I don't care if there wasn't any human involved.

    I'm skeptical.

    I don't see AI as being a big deal, mostly because it has to generate content from the internet and that is a pile of hot garbage.

    It's not there yet but for sure AI is in the future for games and not just MMOs. Imagine Skyrim but every single NPC has a story, goals, and predispositions on how they will interact with you. As you help or hinder their goals they change their reactions to you in real time. There's no realistic way a human can code all these combinations and permutations. Maybe for one, but hundreds? Thousands? A whole planet of people procedurally generated? Imagine walking through Night City in Cyberpunk 2077 and instead of just randomly generated people that have no ability to interact with you other than to give a single canned response, they all have a deep backstory with near and long term goals some of which can spawn side jobs for you. This will be doable with AI. ChatGPT is just the infancy of what AI will be able to do in the future.

    Now the down side of AI is it's absolutely going to cost jobs. Artists, and musicians will be first to go. We already see this happening. Eventually it will get good enough to realistically replace most developers on a team. You'll still need a lead for oversight and tweaking, but the days of needing hundreds of developers to build a game are numbered. I have no idea what the ones who don't make the cut will do but they had better start thinking about that now.

    Actually I think that AI was first introduced for gaming. I remember years ago ( 30+) now, companies like Sega were producing AI characters for football games and the likes. To increase their awareness of what’s happening on the field. So honestly imo, AI today is just something that’s returning home to gaming which is where it’s from.

    AI is there to make your game play experience better and not worse. As far as AI goes when thinking about NPC’s in an online RPG it just kind of makes sense. As you can’t have GM’s that are handing out unique quests and rewards like a Dungeon Master in D&D would do.

    Just think how cool it could be that if you walk up to an NPC ‘and depending on the size of your party that you have assembled it would tailor the quest and difficulty to numbers of players and the classes they are using. Then you can also have AI looking at the number of people online and the areas that they are gathered and depending on some factors it might decide to start a siege on your city.

    Or it finds a remote place were no players are so the AI generates a couple towers that opens a crack in dimensions and starts to summon a massive balrog from hell, but in order to summon it it first sends out demons to collect resources and this is announced so you can attack this on multiple levels.

    What any unemployed but talented computer person would do.

    Figure out a way to disrupt, influence or even take control of the AI and bring the entire mess crashing down around humanity.
