I have no less desire to play Vanguard than I did 6 months ago.  This is a definite go for me.  I'll play Guild Wars until VSoH is released (why not, post initial purchase, it's free), and then we'll see what Vanguard is all about.  :)

I was upset when I heard about SOE taking over (yes even though I play EQ2...but I was looking forward to jumping ship).  Sigil just went from a game studio to a co-publisher which will give them more control over the game not less.  Brad still has the same vision, and I think it says a lot that he went to some other company rather than let MS dictate to him how they wanted the game to be (cuz I bet MS was doing just that).

I remember what MS did with AC1, AC2 and that other Vikings Online (or whatever it ws called) MMO that never even made it.  MS drops games like hot potatos the second they don't produce millions of subscribers, and I would hate to see them do that to VG when it's past the point of no return for that MMO.  SOE will support the game until there's like 5 people left playing.

I do have to admit that I'm not looking forward to substandard customer service, and yes I now have this twitchy feeling that a nerf bat is around every corner now.

Well, if the game has substandard customer service blame Sigil - NOT SOE.  As Sigil will be the one doing customer support.  SOE will be doing technical support.  How those two will interact remains to be seen.

Yes, I plan on playing this game, but in no way does that mean I am writing a review saying this will be the most wonderful, amazing game ever.  I simply don't know that, but I will say this.

Long, long ago in a galaxy far....

Okay, sorry, I wandered for a moment.

Long, long ago, back in 1999, I went into Electronics Boutique searching for my first MMORPG because a neighbor who knew I liked computer games said, "Hey, have you ever heard of this online game called EverQuest?"

Well, back in those misty, ancient days there were the Big Three, which were Ultima Online, EverQuest and Asheron's Call.

The guys at EB made recommendations to me (on my first trip to the store I purchased EQ) and I finally settled on Asheron's Call (on a second trip to the store) -- and I was promptly told, "You picked the worst of the three!"

I ignored them and took the game home, loved it (technically, I did play EverQuest for a week previous to playing AC, but really was very unimpressed with EQ at that time -- years later, after many changes, PoK, etc., I did play EverQuest and enjoyed it) and played Asheron's Call for about three years, considering the first 18-month storyarc of the Shadow Wars to be classic fantasy entertainment.

Apologies to UO but I could not accept a game that was not fully 3-D, having been spoiled by the look of console games -- although in all other respects the game, I am told, was superb.

The point is, my first, long-term, enjoyable online gaming experience was with a game that was considered by several EB employees (who were playing UO or EQ) to be "the worst of the three."

I am very glad I did not listen to their advice or else I would have denied myself the first good online entertainment that I had.

Considering all this SOE/MS debate, I remember NOT liking the MS Gaming Zone, nor logging on through the MS site, and wished Turbine has not signed with Microsoft at all.  Nor am I impressed with MS to this day, actually preferring SOE to "run the servers and collect the money" because I tend to feel they are more efficient (and I realize this is very much debatable) and I really like the idea of the Sony Station Pass.

I must admit, however, I have played many online games which, finally, I did not like and cancelled -- but, I did try to form my own opinion of each game.

AC, EQ, AO, DAoC all were fine games and I am glad I played each one of them.  Others are more forgettable.

I read what reviewers say, I read what beta players say, but, in the long run, to be fair to myself, I have to make the decision to play or not to play a game based on my own, personal gameplay experience -- and not anybody else's.

Therefore, again, yes, I plan to play Vanguard.  That's the only way I will really know if I will like the game or not.

I've been waiting for this game for over 2 years, some have been waiting much longer. It's being made just for me is the impression I get when reading the FAQ. I have high hopes for this one and I'll pre-ordering and playing at launch. See you there!
