Light on story and deep on game mechanics, Wartales is a grand open-world adventure where you take a band of budding mercenaries and try to achieve a single goal - survive. Mitch spent the last few weeks exploring what Wartales has to offer, and meeting that goal isn't as easy as it might seem.

Very solid and addictive gameplay. I've put about 75 hours into it.

The game has got a varied reception, fans of this genre like me will no doubt be pleased but it questionable if this sort of game is not your thing.

Sounds like a great game, but yeah for me turn based combat is just Zzzzz. If it were real time which you could pause and give orders I'd be in. Turn based is not only really tedious for me, but also completely unrealistic to the point of breaking the immersion. Anyway for those into this type of combat I'm sure the game is really cool. Has great ideas for sure.

I totally get that. When I play Turn-based games, I treat them as more of an animated boardgame than a video game.

Chaos Gate brought that exact feeling without the hassle of setting up the board, finding somebody to play with according to my schedule, and easy customization.

At first I enjoyed the turn based games, but then one day something just snapped and I no longer had patience for them anymore.....I think it is more "turn based" burnout more than anything.

Same here. Divinity:OS2, played for a solid amount of time until I one day NOPED and haven't looked back.

Nothing wrong with turn based you heretics, but it has to be for the right sort of game. :)

I love turn based game but I liberally space those games out or else you do suffer from burnout.

Sure, but that like with FPS or whatever, even a solid MMORPG gives you burn out.

I prefer turn-based because the only time I play this type of game is when I want to chill. RTS can be too hectic.

I played a bit at launch but gave up in Ludern because it wasn't fun and levelling become a huge grind.

Have patches made it any better?

I would highly recommend it if you at all enjoy turn based combat.  Word of warning, there is no magic and I know that is a no-go for some diehards.  There is at least one mod being worked on that adds healers and casters, but no idea how far along it is. Other than having to camp a little too often, I really enjoyed the game and it was, at least for me, a unique take on the genre.
