This is why I hate Hardcore + Online Only. Hardcore is supposed to be a challenge to your playing, building etc skills. Well ... how in the hell is it a challenge of any sorts if you can lose it to a lag spike?

    FUCK ALWAYS ONLINE!

I've always wondered when people said they "lost" to a lag spike or a disconnect they weren't being disingenuous and using the excuse to cover their mistake.

    Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Obviously.

Ultimately, I think always online is a worthy tradeoff for the dynamic events/world bosses. The latter adds more to the game than the former removes. It's not like it's always online for no good reason.

As far as Hardcore in these games, for most players who aren't racing to 100, Hardcore just adds optional tension and replay value to a genre that would otherwise just be mindlessly easy (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Is this what constitutes 'MMO news' now? Really?

    'Random player dies because DC'?

It's more of an amusing/frustrating fluff piece. It's not headline news, but it is interesting to hear about.

Ouch. That hurts. He should have been using the potion that prevents you from dying for 30 minutes in Hardcore. . . . . . .

Is it bad karma I'm lmao to D4 "hardcore" players?

HC on the first week of launch is just asking for trouble.

I had zero connection issues during the 4 days of early access but since the full launch, I've had multiple DCs.

I played a lot of D3 HC and never had this happen to me but I always knew it was a possibility.

    Sucks for him.

It's an mmo-alike, or online multiplayer game. You don't say that about other always online multiplayer games do you? Or maybe you do, but just pointing out that always being online is a core component of the GaaS games this site specializes in. It just seems like an odd sentiment on this site.

Now, if you said the same thing about The Witcher 3 or Hogwarts Legacy or Skyrim, then I would agree because those are single player deals. But for an online game, that just doesn't make sense.

Nah, hardcore is for bragging rights. If you want to test your skills you can play regular just as easily and stop playing with a character if there is a legit death that is not connection related.

Rob was first to 100, yes, but in normal mode. Carn was first to 100 in HC mode.

Always Online was only in D3 to fight piracy. It's in D4 because the game is designed to be an MMOARPG ala Lost Ark and Marvel Heroes

Huh. Lag spikes are indeed the cause of many a hardcore death.

The direction Blizz is taking with it's game having this ludicrous amount of social media presence and the pressures that comes with is just... it feels dirty.

I'll be happy when the buzz for the game dies down and the advertisers and corporate sponsors moves on to the next big thing to leech off of, so they can focus on just making the game better and let the communities form out of their love for the game; and not from the impossible pressures of social street cred or whatever kids call it these days.

I'm no Blizzard apologist or defender but are you seriously taking a company to task for marketing and promoting their product to increase sales? Whether you hate social media or not it's an effective way to advertise in most cases. There are a million reasons to hate on the current Blizzard or Activision. Just advertising a product shouldn't be one of them.

    Doesn't mean it's true.

I've been playing online games for years and the level of ego hurt that some gamers seem to get, and to make up any lie to cover something that points to a mistake, isn't new.

So sure, it's very possible it was a lag spike. Or they made a mistake, died and couldn't handle what they felt was a failure "it was a lag spike!"

I can't tell you how many times, in Lineage 2, some pvp was going on and instead of just losing the player would "disconnect." Once, fine, twice sure ok but so many times one starts realizing that some players can't handle failure.

I'll add that it doesn't mean it's false. Just wondering ...

I speak only for myself. I remember actually having fun with Path of Exile(melee Ranger ... was awhile ago) in HC then I died against Innocence when a phantom bullet hell phase ball hit me. Literally. I didn't see a thing touch my character, but she was apparently dead. Even GGG looked at it and confirmed my suspicions. I died to lag. Are there others who pretend? Yes, 100%.

Tbh? Always online(be it in an mmo or otherwise) brings NOTHING to me. Especially in this age where I don't need games to talk about them. There are discords, reddits, forums ... more than enough.

We are going to have a couple of months of "anything happening in D4 is news" I know it is silly, but it sells so there it is.

There is no way they would have called it softcore! Unless they want to wind their player base up. :)

I used to only play hardcore in Path of Exile in the past. I loved it back then, since I loved to go really hard on the game and as soon as I died I moved on and came back weeks, months or years later when I had the itch again. In that way I never really experienced the real end-game, which have increased the longevity of the game for me.

Nowadays I don't spend that much time playing games, so rather just go softcore. Probably ain't going to reach the true end-game anyway :)

There is a message in the upper right corner in the "Breaking News" box that informs they are performing maintenance and players could experience login issues or disconnects. I wonder if that came before this big event or afterwards.
