Smart move. Now add a cash shop, battle pass, and reasons to keep playing past level 10, and you have a revenue model and marketable game.

So if I buy the game I get one, count 'em one, character slot?

They might have to refine their approach.

So the no-subscription option is kind of like a free trial except that it isn't free?

To me, the game is still not worth playing. They're not really doing us any favors.

Bingo, it isn't the sub model or game price keeping me away, just not a game / design model I'm interested in playing, certainly not one that is substantially lacking in content by most accounts here and elsewhere.

That was quick. F2P by the end of the year?

The game was never good enough to warrant a subscription. Subscription is for top-of-the-line, AAA games like Final Fantasy 14 or WoW between 2004 and 2010, those are two games that I can understand requiring a subscription, but Embers Adrift ... they should be happy people are even playing their game.

Even if they go fully F2P without even a cash shop and no way to even make money, not even donations, I don't think a lot of people will start playing their game.

I guess when they launched with a subscription they were way in over their heads thinking a lot of people will pay a monthly subscription for a sub-par indie MMORPG that's rough around the edges and doesn't have much content to begin with. But now they seem to have had a reality check when they realised their daily population being below 100 people probably has to do with the quality of the game and them requiring a monthly subscription.

I can think of a few other indie MMORPGs of the same quality that are completely F2P and some other non-indie MMORPGs that are of better quality and are also F2P so Embers Adrift have so much competition that I think even B2P will not be enough for them.

I'm glad they at least went to the Project Gorgon model, I own Project Gorgon, but I don't understand how their game is sustainable and I don't know for how long Embers Adrift will be sustainable too.

People are paying 28 dollars for a simple costume in D4. I do not think the problem is a $10 sub. I will agree that it's more along the line of just not being fun enough to play, at least the last time I looked. Once it goes optional sub I will take another peak.

But honestly to really make an impact I think they will need some kind of endless trial. Where you can play up to a certain level for free or something.

I am paying 11€s a month to maintain a loot pet in Undecember. I have spent about 60€s on storage tabs so monthly subscription isn't the problem. It is the game not the monthly sub.

I watched a stream for an hour and wouldn't play this game for free.

I have a mixed opinion on this game.  I havent played this game since it released and I played for the free weekend with some people that never played this game, but generally like old school mmo's.

Noticed some changes, many for the better.  Mainly I noticed, improved mob mechanics, exploring improvents like chests and boss mobs in alot of places.  Little bit better loot than before(still have a long ways to go).

Friends liked it as expected, as I told them they would like it between 5-20 levels.  Mainly because the groups, social aspect and trinity were fun.

So I am approaching this from a different perspective.  If you think $30 is worth about 100 hours of fun group oldschool gameplay, then this is probably worth it.  If you like remaking characters, then you can probably extend that out for each new character you make.
20 levels of this game is probably like 45-50 levels of WoW classic.

I would say that if you enjoy the mechanics, etc. then there's good content up to level 30 now.
