imageFinal Fantasy XVI Review | MMORPG.com

From its outrageously beautiful visuals to its brilliant story, Final Fantasy XVI is compelling from start to finish. Its action combat is topped only by the incredible Kaiju-esque Eikon battles, and its story is one of the best Bradford has played in the series. Here is our review.

Pre-ordered and pre-loaded! Cannot wait! The demo was amazing. What did surprise me in the demo is how dark, gritty and bloody (gore) this new entry is. Quite a surprising shift within FF.

Same. The dark atmosphere and seriousness during the demo reminded me of Final Fantasy Tactics, which was by far my favorite story in the series. I'm so very excited to start playing this tonight.

Yea... Unfortunately, I can't remove the News Editor tag, something Shank takes advantage of time and time again.

I am glad it is such a good rpg. Guess there is still hope.

I will patiently wait for it to release on PC.

PC Gamer may give this one a 95% by their early praise, so a 10 here seems fair.

    Waiting for this on PC.

Baldurs Gate III versus Final Fantasy 16 for GOTY, it's gonna be tough to pick one.

It'll likely be BG3 because Japan got a win last year, but i wouldn't be surprised if FF16 gets it; Yoshi-P is kinda everyone's daddy. xD

I was more pointing to the joke of him saying he cannot play the game because he doesn't own a Switch, while FFXVI is a PS5 exclusive and can only be played on the PS5. ;)

Hasn't been for a few years now. Christina took over his role.  He still contributes, though!

Historically they'd have to give it a 10/10 just because of Roberts 10/10 XV review which he promptly dropped to 9/10 after people pointed out that having 5 cons in a 10/10 review doesn't add up.

Giving it a 9/10 would be admitting the dumpster fire of XV was equal to XVI. Imagine giving an unfinished game the same score as a finished game. Not a good look.

Hey, it could be worse, it could be Edwin Evans-Thirlwell giving it a 6/10 because he got his ass publicly blasted by the lead developer.

From navigating the landmines, avoiding spoilers, and spelling Valisthea correctly, I give this review a 10/10. :)

This is some tin foil hat-level stuff, mate. Like, you can't really be serious here, right?

I wasn't managing editor when XV came out, nor did I even look at the score from that game. Wasn't aware of the controversy either - again, because I was a freelancer and not an editor at the time. Very different people running the show here.

Our scale has also changed since I took over, so the way we score reviews is very different the older days.

I'm not sure I can say this loud enough for the people in the back, but we don't look at the scores from other reviews when deciding on a score for this review. We score based on what we just played - not what someone else played years ago and then try to balance it here. That just makes zero logical sense, nor is it sound criticism of a game.

If I felt this game was worthy of a 9, or a 6, or whatever, that's what the score would have been. Nothing else would have contributed to that other than my thoughts on this game and the way this review reads. And that goes for all of our reviews.

Final Fantasy XVI, in my opinion, is a masterpiece. And thus, on our scale, that would be a 10. Pure and simple.

Clearly a good game but a 10 is going too far, games are so over-scored these days I am waiting for the first review site to give a game an 11.

Back in the day scores were determined by several gaming magazines, ever since it became done by loads of gaming websites those scores have crept up. We have reached the point where a 0.5 difference (or five on the 100 scale) is seen as significant.

Don't believe me? Think about this, a game that gets 4.5 is just going to be thought of as good as a game that gets 5.0, you are not going to expect the 4.5 to be any different from the 5.0. But when it is 8.5 and 9 you are expecting to see a noticeable difference. This is because gaming media has hyped the scores squeezing them into the 7 to 10 area. There is not much space there to differentiate between games so a 0.5 is a big deal.

This inflation process is seen in everything from school grades to Olympic scores, it not just a problem in gaming by any means.

Finally it is not out yet on the PC so how can it get a 10? Until it is on the PC it is not possible it could get a perfect score. ;)

Welp when Yoshi-P decide to make Heavensward a standalone patch, most likely it will ended up with a god tier storyline Or maybe it's a Shadowbringer 2.0? either way, well played Final Fantasy team, well played

    Games should be scored on a 1 - 5.
