Free Trials and Credit Cards.

MihosMihos Member Posts: 24

This thread is meant to serve three purposes:

1. Please vent whatever anger you have at games that declare you will be allowed a "Free Trial" and then ask you for Credit Card information before you can participate.

2. To take a poll and see how deep the annoyance at the practice has gone.

3. To make a LIST of all of the games that state they have a Free Trial and yet ask you for your credit card!

Games that state a "Free Trial" but ask you for Credit Card information anyway:

* Matrix Online.

    Put

*Horizons  - on top - I downloaded the whole damn game , just to be suddenly asked CC number.

    *DAOC

*Ryzom - but there is a trick  put your payment option to cash - and you dont have to give any CC number

Anyway I see CC number as something i am very reluctant to give over internet , especially if i am not going to make payments. Some games like DAOC went so far and billed trial users without a warning ... i just dont want to have a additional headache and bother of being sure my trial is canceled and what not.

Thus i avoid so called free (gimme your CC number) trials

No offense to anyone who thinks differently, but I've never understood what the problem is with this. Yes, it's a bit unnecessary and relies on the player remembering to cancel his/her account, but such behaviour is not really surprising in the modern business era. Why does everyone object to it?

Here's my reasoning: if it's a free trial of a game with a montly fee, and you decide you like it and want to keep playing, then  you're going to have to give them your card details anyway. If you decide you don't like it, and you don't want to keep playing, then your card is never charged, so you don't lose anything.

Of course, if they charge your card before they were supposed to, that's different. Go sue 'em!

funny your example is WRONG. If you gave them your credit card information, then you just canceled your trial and bought a month of gameplay, you might want to check your credit card bill. after you start the matrix online trial, right away a message comes up. asking if you want to buy a monthly subscribtion with a button clicking continue. DO NOT CLICK CONTINUE, your trial has already started and you can play! if you click continue and enter your credit card details you CANCEL your trial and you have just bought a MONTH worth of gametime. the matrix online does NOT require a credit card.

I hate how certain games try to abuse the trials by asking creditcard information.

If u don't abort the trial before it expires u will get billed as a paying customer...

Another thing I encountered (specifically in ATITD2), I was a paying customer but cancelled my account after a week of subscription. The result was that I couldn't use up the rest of the gametime. The account was closed immediately...

Never heard of time card, some people don't want credit card and they buy time card. So if they want to try the game before they buy it they can't because of the credit card info.

What about the kids who doesn't have a credit card and mom and dad ask them to check for the free trial but don't want to give their credit card information on all site on the net to try every game.

I don't like to know that my credit card number is at 10 different mmo company because I wanted to try the trial before I buy it.

But the major issue for me is, when I play my wallet is in my room, so that means I want to stand up from my super chair sheessh, walk to my room, get the credit card, go back to the PC. But that's not all, I have to bring it back after. What is up with that for crying out loud, those company never thinks about what they make us do for free stuff.

Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!

The reason I have a problem with this is I'm one of those people who hates having his credit card used online unless it's for a book purchase or a one time shot of something. When it comes to MMORPGs, I almost always buy a game card, and that works for me. These automatic billing systems have screwed me so many times in the past, where I've played the game for the trial period, switched to game card option, and then STILL got charged on my credit card. Sony has screwed me so many times on this, even with an entire week left on my "trial" periods.

I'm now to the point where I don't trust the billing sections of these companies, and when a "free trial" game tells me to put in my credit card information, I decline to play the game. Yeah, I'm the one that loses out but I'm tired of being nickle and dimed to death by these games. It's not like I can't afford it, but it's quite often the principle of the whole thing that gets on my nerves.

I think it helps reduce "alternate" character abuse in games to need at least a CC on file. Planetside doesn't need a CC to start thier trial so you see cheaters and griefier at a much higher level then before because if they are caught or banned they can just make another free account and do it again.

The recuit a friend WOW promo if it didn't have a CC required I'm sure you would see more cheaters and Farmers than what already exist within the PAYING population which is TOO much considering how old some of these accounts are.

a CC number at some level does put a trackable identity to an account and as such help deter people that which to use that account from doing flagrant acts of abuse on the game's systems and existing populations.

That's nice, but their solution to one problem doesn't solve the other problem it creates. People like me aren't going to give credit card information. In the end, the sufferer is the game company that can't attract the amount of people it wants to because I know there are a LOT of people just like me. There are other more creative solutions to avoid griefers in a computer game than to use a credit card option. Credit card options are decisions of billing departments, not the departments that handle griefing possibilities. For the most part, the two really don't talk to each other at all.

My time is money or even more importantly my time is fun, now i don't care which tactic any company uses as long as i know beforehand everything there is to know.

If a company needs my CC for me to be able to log in even with my trial account, fine as long as i know it before i DL/Install their software and not after it is really annoying to do so because in this case i have allways uninstalled the software not because i don't use my CC online, i do but because the company found it nescesary by purpose or not not to inform me of their policy beforehand.

I must also mention here another one of these type of insidents that happened very recently, i decided to give Dark and Light a chance, knowing it is launched end of this month i decided to prepay and DL the software, amazingly the only way they accept payment is through ClickAndBuy, i gringe i don't mind using my CC but all these Click-And-Buy methods going around make me nervous, i dont even use it with Amazon, anyway beeing in desperate times require desperate actions, and as i dont have anything to play at this time and have been without Online gaming for a month or so i decide what the hell ill register, so there i am giving all my info and CC to ClickAndBuy who at the end proceeds to inform me....

...Thanks for your subscription, this service is not available to your region.

And i am WTF, if you can't provide service were i am be it generaly or specicificaly for DnL why the hell don't you tell me from the start, make me waste my time and give my info away for nothing, for this reason DnL will never have the privilge of beeing installed on my PC and taking any money from my CC.

I too hate to put in my Credit Card for something that is "free". Why do they need it if not to charge me for something. There is no other reason they need it.
