IRONFIST just hit our 20th anniversary this May! It has been a wild ride since Planetside 1 all the way to now. People have come and gone, I have attended weddings of members, I have been on ventrillo, TS and Discord over breakups. I have seen it all and it is amazing, because the community is more than just people online, we honestly are like a family, it is crazy to say that about some people you have never met before.

People broke up relationships with guild members listening?
Doesn't that seem ... like something that shouldn't happen?
In any case, congratulations on your long standing guild!

I should clarify, I have been the person they talk to going through a breakup, kinda that ear that is there. Replacing the role traditionally held by a in person.

Since the launch of DAOC. Actually, some were together since the launch of Ultima Online. We have been as large as a hundred members in WoW but have a core of 6-10. Zero drama. If someone isn’t into the New Game they just come back for the next one. And we fill in between with smaller multiplayer games like survival ones, ARPGs or CRPGs.

I have been playing the mmo game with a small group of my friends since it was released Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. We met there for the first time and in the 15 years we played more mmo and coop games and even though we each play something different, we meet on discord every day (teamspeak before).
My main guild and I have been together since the launch of LOTRO. Prior to that I played EQ, COH, SWG and WOW with the same group. I am still real life friends with many of them. I started with OTG (Old Timers Guild) with LOTRO and been with them since.
We played with OTG a bunch but when they had the whole “uprising “ thing and the Admin Lord Marshal was forced out it was just too much for us. Way too much drama for a No Drama guild IMHO. But met some good people there and one or two still play with us today.

Se7eN, we started as a guild in Lineage2 in 2004 in argentina and we still play together when we can. Most of the guild have now families, live abroad, and other responsibilities but we keep always in touch and game together every time we can. So to this day, we know each other for almost 19 years and some of them i know them before playing D&D.
I managed about 6 years with the same guild, across 3 games. I was guild leader for about 4.5 of those years.
Definitely a big fan of guilds and what they can offer, they will definitely keep you playing way longer than normal. But, the game is still the most important factor, no matter how good your guild is, if the game sucks then you'll quit eventually.
For me these days, the games are too bad for me to stick around long enough to find a good guild. It takes time to get to know the people on your server, to start to recognise the names of people and guilds and to get a good idea of where you'll fit in. But, if the game is boring me by the end of week one, there's just no way I'll ever find a guild.

Half a year at max during WoW's launch. My first guild and my first and last to lead. Lot's of nice people ranging from age 15-50 years. Fun times but as new MMO's and other games draw me and others away from WoW so the guild disbanded and unfortunately not a single person stayed in touch (maybe because back then the only outside software used was TeamSpeak and there was no Facebook etc.)
Later I joined a WoW guild from an irl friend and stayed there for a few months aswell but with these guys I still play from time to time (last time was the launch of New World)
Outside of these two guilds I wasn't ever able to connect to any other guild. Everything went very unpersonal, LFG got added to MMOS, many guilds were 90% irl talk about politics and shit and adding to that there were not many MMOs around that kept me hooked for longer than 1-2 months so I mostly didn't even bothered to join any guild at all.
It's kinda sad and I'm always a bit jealous of people who still got their gaming clan and stay in contact but at least irl it went a lot better so I can't really complain. Just gotta convince my friends that it's ok try try something else than CS or LoL after 20+ years...
Guilds made MMORPG's for me, something I only truly realised when the MMOs started to change and I relied on the guild more and more to play it as much as possible the old way. I have had three main guilds (ones that lasted longer than a year), starting with DAOC.
I never started a guild, but I inherited leadership in two MMOs, was second officer in another, but in some I stayed rank and file as that is an easier ride in many ways.
Changing MMOs is fraught with difficulties, how many will go, do they want to still play the current MMO? We have mostly tended to move part of the guild to a new game, the old game still having a strong contingent. Most often the new game petered out after a few months to a year and then they return to the old game. DAOC, WoW, Lotro, Aoc, SWTOR, TSW (while running) are the ones that at least one of those guilds kept a big presence in.
My best guilds came from the early days of MMOs when we needed to play together.....I think the longest one went about 3 years.....When I log back into that account occasionally now, it says the last guild member (of about 200 people) to log in was over 5 years ago....Most of the guilds I am in today are in name only....No one talks and we dont do anything together....The games have been made so easy now we really dont have much need anymore.
