ArcheAge may be closing in the West Soon

According to a translated news article shared over on r/MMORPG

"Translated article:

> XLGames is recruiting applicants for voluntary retirement and in-house transfer placement for developers belonging to the 'Archiage' development team.

> This is a follow-up measure taken following the decision to terminate the overseas service of 'Ake Age' when the existing contract period with regional distributors expires.

> This decision was made at a time when the company was laying the groundwork for a turnaround due to the box office success of 'Ake Age: War' and the development team was receiving separate compensation. It is evaluated that there is a possibility of recommended resignation if the recruitment of voluntary retirees does not meet the company's predicted demand and the transitional placement is not sufficiently carried out.

> On the 24th, a source familiar with the situation at XLGames said, "Last week, the 'ArchiAge' development team was informed of the recruitment of voluntary retirees, and the compensation conditions given to the voluntary retirees and the opportunity to apply for a transitional placement will be announced today."

> The source added, "The union is asking the management to further expand compensation, such as differentiating compensation conditions according to the number of years of service, and not to recommend resignation in the future.

> 'ArcheAge' is a PC MMORPG introduced after CEO Jaekyung Song left NC to establish XLGames. It was the company's main source of revenue until 'Moonlight Sculptor' and 'Archiage War' appeared.

> The reduction in manpower at the development studio was announced when the management recently announced the plan to terminate sequential service of 'Archiage' inside the company. This is because the overseas service for each region of 'ArcheAge' has been decided to end as soon as the contract period with each distributor is over.

> Currently, the number of 'ArcheAge' development teams is about 100, and the cost of maintaining 'ArchiAge' services, including their labor costs, is estimated to be around 14 billion won per year. The company is known to observe that if it cuts about 30% of this cost, it will be able to meet the break-even point through the game during the remaining period of 'Archie Age' service.

> XL Games recorded sales of 17.8 billion won and operating loss of 31.3 billion won last year. 'Archie Age War', released on March 21st, was a box office hit and laid the foundation for a turnaround. It is estimated that about 5 billion won per month is paid to XL Games, excluding the share distributed to the app market such as Google and the distributor Kakao Games among the sales generated by 'ArcheAge War'. It is known that the operating cost of the 'Archie Age War' team is about 10 billion won a year.

> It is estimated that the company has set aside 10 billion won in incentives annually for the development team of 'Arke Age War' apart from the manpower reduction of 'Arke Age'. It was found that each milestone was paid sequentially. 20% of the net profit paid to XL Games out of the sales of 'Archie Age War' is set as an incentive. 'Archie Age War' is the first project in XLGames to set individual performance incentives.

> It is known that the company is not ruling out the possibility of recording an annual unit loss this year if sales of 'Archie Age War' decrease in the second half of the year. Even though the overall situation of the company is not going well and the restructuring of the main studio is ahead, the development team of 'Archie Age War' is given a separate reward.

> It is known that there is controversy within the company over this policy.

> An employee of XLGames argued, "Effortless retirement is accepted with insufficient compensation in reality, and there is a high possibility that it will lead to recommended resignation because the transitional arrangement is not easy.

> The 'Archie Age' development team was organized in the same studio as the 'Archie Age 2' development team, but recently the two development teams were separated into separate studios. Producer Ham Yong-jin, who was in charge of both projects, was reorganized to take charge of only 'Archie Age 2'.

    There's people who would notice?

Dozens of them.  More seriously, the beta for the OG western Arche Age was some of the most fun I've had playing an MMO.  And then they proceeded to shit the bed with the full release.  Oh well.  Having too much fun with Remnant 2 to even care now.  Seriously, Remnant 2 is fucking awesome.

The article tosses around financial figures in the $7MM to $25MM range so someone is spending money on it. (Though the word "estimated" is used a lot)

Could all be total BS, one never can tell these days.

I can remember when it first launched and players saying they had missed the boat because they had not joined early enough and bought land. Something like that anyway, I found it a rather strange way to build a MMORPG community.

Yeah, that was a big issue in the initial US launch, the land rush aspect of it combined with rampant cheating, and ridiculous login queues at launch meant I never really got to play after the beta ended.

Considering how much of the game was based around housing, limiting land was basically indirectly limiting their customer base.  A really bold strategy, that's for sure!

Not at all surprising. I will give them an A for effort. They tried every trick in the book to get people to play it.

I'm honestly surprised it lasted as long as it did. It would stupid for Kakao to take it over and then try to upshift the B2P model of Unchained to a P2P model. Just dumb.

It was the same in Europe. When you construct a game that is going to turn people away you have to wonder, "how did that get through the design stage"?

Are they using blockchain on the backend?
If not, that is the reason why it is failing since blockchain is basically the same as success.

I think it's because these games are designed with a different mindset, one where competition/ or conflict with other players over almost every aspect of the gameplay is intentionally baked into their core designs.

Add in some predatory monetization to take advantage of the huge amount of FOMO the game induces in their customers and you end up with systems like AA's land rush mechanics.

I mean, who doesn't enjoy clawing and scrabbling vs hundreds if not thousands of other players (and bots)  just to buy a small plot of land to plant their crops or trees and call it home?

Well me for one, apparently quite a few more as well.
