Bungie have consistently been among the greediest, most incompetent studios in the industry, ever since the beginning of Destiny 1, and we mostly let it slide because they were the makers of a once legendary series a long ass time ago.
Remember guys, paying a box price and a sub is just way too damn expensive. Free to play is clearly superior................... ./sarcasm
Except Destiny 2 originally had a box price. And has had lots of expansions. And has a battle pass subscription. And requires a PS Plus/Xbox Live subscription on consoles. And has a f2p cash shop. It's all of the things, and at best the free to play model is a trial version.

Think they have to many purple haired people working at Bungie, Get some regular guys in there for regular guy content. I played some of the last content they released and the zones where abysmally crafted. It went from amazing to not even Wild Star level graphics.
How hard is it to make thing cost $.50 to a dollar. Trying to cash out on 100 people instead of thousands is really dumb.
Was a pretty big fan of the game, but Bungie needs to reevaluate the people they have in house, because the level of quality isnt even F tier.

This is true of all Free to Play titles. If you want the full experience of the game you have to shell out cash, and the amount you have to shell out typically far exceeds what you used to shell out with a box price + subscription. There are FPT titles out with a fair model, but they seem to be the exception not the rule.
How did we get here? Because players pushed back on developers decrying the subscription model as a ripoff. Developers said "hold my beer" and came up with the FTP model, or like you mentioned, the "kitchen sink" model where they're going to hit you with everything they can think of. If we had only been happy with the original sub model where you got everything in the game for a fair monthly price we'd still be there, but no, $15/mo was simply too much to pay. We only have ourselves to blame for the current state of monetization.
I used to play D2 a lot back when Forsaken dropped, it was a blast. Then Shadowkeep came out and I was shocked that they charged so much money for so little content. The season passes were what really broke the camel's back for me though, I got timegated out of a quest I was really invested in because I took a break from the game and the season ended.
Thankfully I quit before getting too heavily invested in the game, I can only imagine that most people still stick with this game due to sunk cost fallacy and they are determined to get some kind of enjoyment out of the game for all the money they dumped into it.

People can let their "fan-self" pull the wool over their own eyes about a game, I have definitely done that before myself. But sunk cost is also why I think we see so many games being defended on here when posters must have doubts about them.
I do NOT recommend Destiny 2, despite the fun gunplay, simply because the cost of the game’s many features and functions is absurd. I normally hate PvP, but I’ve played quite a bit of it in D2. So, when I learned that power could be purchased, it was a complete turn-off.
All that said, I tried to go back just before Lightfall and was (as mentioned) bombarded with too many currency systems. Of course, I had waited for everything I wanted to be on sale, but there was just so much that I still spent entirely too much to get back into the swing of things. After a short time, I was bored of the same old top-tier grind and disgusted with the cash-poaching mechanics.
I’m out. I’m done with D2. They need to grow a heart, quick. What they’re doing may be making someone rich, but it also makes them slimy and pathetic - like most other games these days.

Only if you cant control yourself......In the end its the player that says yes or no to buying.
Not at the same experience as when one flat sub rate got you the same complete content as everyone else for a fair price.
Those days are long gone though, developers now try to include as many monetization models as their audience will bear.
