I've been playing a game I really like (Runescape), which has only one problem - a single character can do everything. There are skills, but no specialization - a high level character like the one I've got eventually trains everything. Moreover, there's almost never any point to working with other players; one may trade with them, but with no specialization there's little point to groups, and no support for them. Net result - I'm bored.
I'm looking for something with specialized characters, and lots of opportunity for teamwork, as somewhat of a change of pace. I'm not interested in PvP, and won't play anywhere that random attacks by strangers are a significant problem.
I also have problems with games that are too mouse-intensive, particularly where there's lots of dragging and menu selection, or simply lots and lots of clicking required for every action.
I like games that allow more than just combat and looting, but cannot see myself playing a character that's purely artisan or merchant. Being something like a combat medic - or D&D cleric - does rather appeal.
I generally prefer fantasy type games, but I'm probably most flexible on that score.
The two obvious candidates for specialized characters and team-based play seem to be World of Warcraft and Everquest II, but I'm not sure how well or badly they meet my other criteria, and I'd really like something I could try before buying, and find out whether e.g. the user interface drives me crazy, the program disagrees with my firewall, etc. etc. I'm also worried about WoW's reputation for installing snoopware.
I'm hoping some folks here might have good suggestions.

I must say though. I find it funny how you want a game based on classes where everyone is specialized when almost everyone else thinks that type of game play is "The Devil!!!" they want open ended chars than "CAN" learn everything with no classes hehe. Its odd how its the other way around now. I actually prefer the classes system myself.

I'm definitely looking for a change of pace, rather than a single primary game. I like being able to do anything and everything, normally, and having a character of each type doesn't really provide that. But I'm missing group play rather a lot, and I've noticed that, in general, group play and specialized characters generally go together. (Come to think of it, perhaps I should have phrased my original request more generally, and said that what I wanted was a game where group play was common and valuable, but where it was at least possible to play solo, for those times when a decent party can't be found.)
