It is truly an amazing game. The scope of it is insane. And i definitely spent my fair share of time in character creators...more than I've spent playing the game actual campaign.

Still have the original Baldurs Gate games, i just wish that Larian hadn't used 5E, which is an abomination, for me last good was probably around 3.5e though for our current group we are still using 2nd Edition. Personal preferences make all the difference in the world. I just wish they  hadn't used 5E.

If 5e is the latest iteration it might also have to do with Wizards of the Coast wanting it. Why would they want a game pushing an old rule set when they want people getting excited about their current rule set?

There is a problem with coming out with one edition after another of the same rules set, players get a favourite and after that just don't care what comes out next. Over the years DnD has tried to take on various elements of other systems with varying degrees of success. So it is no wonder players eventually ask "is this still DnD"?

Agreed. There is just one miscategorization. I would definitely put BG3 more on the side of D:OS3 than of BG3. But this is nitpicking and based upon criteria used.

Every edition since 2nd ed has fixed some issues while breaking some others and introducing their own set of problems. I think the only reason 2nd Ed didn't feel like it broke stuff is because 1s Ed wasn't fleshed out enough to do so and it filled out so much that was missing. For me, 2nd Edition is really 1st Edition in release form. 1st Edition is more like "early access".

I was reading a reddit thread last night about how monks have basically been broken since 1st Edition and 4th Ed was the only rule set they felt right. That didn't make up for all the other stuff that was wrong. It was interesting seeing the list of puzzling design decisions going all the way back to the early 80s.

5th Edition isn't an abomination to me, but there are things that are so messed up. Critical Rolls, spellcasters being stupidly OP without many of the tradeoffs they used to carry, and the trashing of the monster manual are probably 3 of the biggest in my opinion.

Well, like me, I'm used to 3.5 so if I were to play dungeons and dragons tabletop that's the source I would pull from. Keeping in mind that I would gut the things I don't like.

But you're right, players will get a favorite. However, given that they probably want to make money off their current work, it makes sense they'd seek developers/creators who are willing to use that current work.

For someone like me I guess it doesn't matter as I'm not a stickler for rules. But "yeah," for those who love rules and figuring out what can and can't be done within those rules, of course they might be disappointed.

All I care about is that the game is fun and that as many as possible builds are viable. Aka, let's not get mired in overbuffed stats like Owlcatfinders. That just crushes the build viability and with it, the soul of the game.

DnD rules are always murky and haphazard, burdened down with a thousand legacy bits that interfere with the smooth play of the rules. It's a Frankenstein put together out of parts without regard for their fit.

I'll play DnD based games if they are otherwise good, but the design is ossified.  Jumped ship in preferences as soon as the second wave of RP systems hit the tabletop.

I actually liked the 4th edition set, because it was so much better organized than anything DnD before.  But it was less an RPG set than a miniatures rule set.  I suspect that WotC wanted in on that gloriously overpriced official miniatures market.
