A restructuring at BioWare as a more "agile" team will mean about 50 layoffs as the company focuses on its single-player franchises, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

But but if they half-ass two consecutive games, don't those two together make an Ass-Whole?
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
Also, I'm willing to give them a benefit of a doubt. Laying off people isn't always a bad business / dev move.
Have to disagree on Mass Effect. I can't stand those games. 30 minutes of dialogue followed by 2 minutes of combat then 30 more minutes of dialogue. If I wanted to watch a movie instead of play a game I'd watch a movie. I know people love it, though. Just not my thing.
Don't agree on either sentiment. Replacing game play with heavy handed cut-scene story telling is not "fun". Also single player games take too long to recoup financial investment so are being replaced with G.a.a.S. These companies have seen where the money is and there is no turning back.
Doesn't matter, these companies have already made their investment back several times over. A GaaS being shut down after the brunt of the potential customers have already shot their wads can only be a good thing for them. These companies mantras should be "Launch it, Monetize the Shit out of it, Dump it."
No, these games shut down in less than a year because they flopped hella hard, and the cost of keeping development on them exceeded the return.
1) a change in products, so a particular product is discontinued and that team is let go, it kind of sounds like this in this case
2) a general reduction in workforce to save money, usually impacting middle-management the most
3) a layoff of the bottom 10% based on reviews, this typically happens once a year unless times are good.

They are not "plug and play" games. In fact, they are more similar to stuff like Game of Thrones or, even more epic, Malazan.
Mass Effect is great, but greatest in history? Errrrrrrrrr..

Going to have to have a think about what is the best tribology ever, it is a tall order.
