What Are Your Top Games of The Year so Far?

TerazonTerazon Member RarePosts: 423

I see many people say that BG3 is their GOTY this year.

While I do not agree with that I do place it in my top 7.

This year is a really strong year.

Not everything has released yet like Witchfire, Assassin's Creed Mirage, Like a Dragon Gaiden, Alan Wake2, Banishers, Dungeon 4 (I love this series) so this is just as of now.
Just my opinions.
I just ranked these based on enjoyment for me personally.
Games were played on PC,XBOX Series X, Switch or PS5.

My top games so far are:

14.Dave the Diver
13.Pizza Tower
12.Dredge
11.Diablo 4
10.Hi-Fi Rush
9.Hogwarts Legacy
8.Metroid Prime Remastered
7. Baldur's Gate 3
6.Fire Emblem Engage
5.Starfield
4. Sea of Stars
3.Pikmin 4
2.Shadow Gambit
1.Zelda Tears of the Kingdom for GOTY
( This is such a fun playground. For those that do not like Zelda or Nintendo or whatever else keeps you from experiencing this masterpiece, it is a sandbox game just as much as it is an action-adventure game. It has amazing freedom in the world to do whatever you want.)

Obviously, these are just my opinions based on what I liked so far this year.

What are your top games and GOTY so far this year?
You have played more different games this year than I have in the past 5 years (I average 3 per yr) yet I play 2 to 4 hours a day, every single day of the year.

How in the world do you do this?

Do you ever finish any of them?

I have finished the main story line in all of them accept Starfield which I am currently playing and loving.
Some of these on this list are not overly long games hours wise.
Some I am still playing just to have fun in like Zelda and D4.
For 9 plus months this is not really that many hours.
One game or many games, hours played wise it doesn't matter.

14.Dave the Diver - about 25 hours to beat everything
13.Pizza Tower - about 6 hours to beat - one day
12.Dredge - under 10 hours to beat - one day
    11.Diablo 4 - 25 hours to beat - still playing
    10.Hi-Fi Rush - 10 hours to beat
9.Hogwarts Legacy - 25 hours to beat played around 60
8.Metroid Prime Remastered - 15 hours to beat
    7. Baldur's Gate 3 - 65 hours to beat - (edit to increase to corrected 65 hours played)
6.Fire Emblem Engage - 50 hours to beat
    5.Starfield - 32 hours - Still playing
    4. Sea of Stars - 28 hours to beat
    3.Pikmin 4 - 18 hours to beat
    2.Shadow Gambit - 28 hours to beat
1.Zelda Tears of the Kingdom for GOTY - 60 hours to beat

That is about 400 hours for over 9 months.
Not a lot of game time.

Based on your number 2-4 hours split the difference to 3 hours a day
we can say 9 months with an average of 3 hours a day every day that is over 800 hours played.

    Double my list.

So since you have played double the hours I have this year
I guess that says that you play games that can't be beat and I play ones that generally can be beat.
    Correct?

Geez so many games under 50 hours to beat.  You say a strong year, and all I see is garbage.

Quality of a game is not predicated on the hours it takes to finish it to me.

If you have not played Shadow Gambit I would recommend you look into it.

The games that came out this year that I got are:

Stranger of Paradise (came out this year on PC), Age of Empires 2 Rise of Rome expansion, Octopath Traveler 2, Live a Live remake, and Armored Core 6.

I haven’t beat them all yet, but I like them all.

To me the garbage part is trying to establish a relation between quantity and quality, what a silly thing to say.

My best of the year so far:

    - Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
    - Remnant 2
    - Final Fantasy XVI
    - Brotato (Vampire Survivors gameplay in a Binding of Isaac frame with pure focus on stats and character building. Better then the two games mentioned)

     Yet to play but contenders:

    - Baldurs Gate 3
    - Sea of Stars

Played and thought they would make it beforehand but really aren’t:

    - Diablo 4
    - Starfield

Tons of other great releases this year, it is insane.

I'd put Starfield on my list. I see the game get a lot of hate, but I think that's largely due to people getting it in their head it was going to be a single player Star Citizen in spite of the fact the marketing never claimed that. So the game gets hate because people had unrealistic expectations in spite of the fact it's as good as or better than Skyrim and Fallout 4 both of which I've played.

I had high hopes for Diablo 4, but the boring end game kills it for GOTY. It's a decent ARPG, but nothing special. They need to rethink their itemization.

I need to check out this Sea of Stars everyone is talking about. Edit: nope. Turn-based combat can kiss my ass.

Also it's not out yet but I am super excited for Space Marine 2, but I'm a big WH40k fan. I doubt it will make GOTY just because the IP is a bit niche.

Yep, I play games with no real end, and when I play single player games like Fallout 4 I put in almost 1200 hours, (4 play throughs) and over 1400 hrs on Fallout 76.

I'm currently playing 7D2D since May and can see it being my main game for quite some time to come.

I only ever play one game at a time, and play all possible content including any side stories or what have you

Once I've consumed all content that I'm interested in I set the game aside, usually forever.

I don't think I've bought many games this year.

Over the last few years, a lot of my purchases have been indie / early access city builders like Farthest Frontier and Timberborn. So, I've been periodically going back to these games as they've released big patches.

But, by time, my biggest games of the year have been SWGEmu and Cities: Skylines.

I put a solid 4 months into SWGEmu and had a blast. Nearly everything from the base game is now in and working so I wanted to check it out again. Got my 2 characters up to full templates (max level...), did all the content and then got bored. I actually got quite into crafting, something i usually have no interest in. However, the small size of the community made it a bit pointless as there were too few players (and too many jedi) to make the economy work.

With Cities Skylines, well, its my most played game on steam, and with the hype machines for the sequel kicking into gear over the summer, it made me want to play the original again. I sunk a good 100+ hours into my latest city, I created something that looked really good.

I expect Cities: Skylines 2 will be my GOTY once it's released (and gotten some mods!).
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman

Geez how is this possible, most of the games just start getting good around that time.  No way you can see any of the good stuff from most of the games in that short amount of time.

I pretty much get to end game or really really close if I like a game, then rarely ever go back.

Any game I dont like, I try to get out as soon as I can see its not getting better, so I dont waste my time.  Any game less than 60 hours of content is probably not even worth my time, as that is way to shallow.

100+ hours is generally the minimum, with a select few games getting 1k+ hours.

I haven't played many 2023 games yet. Just Fire Emblem Engage as a gift, Hi Ri Rush on Game Pass, Sea of Stars on PS Plus Extra, and Hogwarts Legacy that dad bought for himself. Of those, I want to give the win to Hi Fi Rush. I'm sure when I get to Baldur's Gate 3 and FF16, I'll have high opinions of them.

That said, I've had a very rich year in gaming due to backlogging and subscription services. I've got a completed playlist going.

If we played games as they came out, we would never clear the backlog, I think I have 45 games paid for and not played. I do realise that the games we talk about as they release may not be played by me in one to two years time unless they are multiplayer and there is guild interest. It is like we are in a time warp or something. :)

Only put launched games on Wishlist, put the others on Follow. That used to drive me mad.

From all the lists on the thread I got 4 or 5 games for my very overburdened Wishlist, so thanks guys...sorta. :)

100+ hours is generally the minimum, with a select few games getting 1k+ hours.
I don't know, I think quality and quantity are generally inversely related, you can have a good game or a long game but not both.
Or the longer a game goes on the more filler content it tends to have and the more likely I am to get burnt out.
Once I get a good feel for the gameplay it loses its luster and I get bored and move on.

It does also depend if you marathon a game or break it up.
There are certainly games I can get a lot of hours in but that is from paying 1 hour a week for a whole year or more.
Games like Mario Kart or other highly repayable games.

Hogwarts Legacy is the only story I've played through so far. I start FFXVI, but won't play through it until I get a TV for my new place. Currently mid through act 2 in Baldur's Gate. Played Diablo 4 before first season.

Between those 4, I think it will end up being:
    1. Baldur's Gate 3
    2. Hogwarts Legacy
    3. FFXVI

Baldur's gate is a phenomenal game. A bit heavy for what I tend to play, since I'm always tired when I am starting a game. Hogwarts Legacy was a great journey and craftsmanship in that universe. I think they did an excellent job with it and it's a great contender for GOTY. FFXVI seems great so far, but I don't get the same vibes as I did playing FFX back in the days. I rage quit FFXV due to all the annoying BS bugs and weird story.

Diablo 4 does not qualify the list based on Blizzard's butchering of the game. Could be a great game, but yeah...

The Path of Exile League would qualify as well. A great league.

Other than that, I've started No Man's Sky again and it feels great. Played Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, Oxygen Not Included, Last Epoch and some more. Feeling spoiled with games honestly.

    - Brotato (Vampire Survivors gameplay in a Binding of Isaac frame with pure focus on stats and character building. Better then the two games mentioned)

LOL I got this game sitting in my library a few months ago on sale because people said it was like Vampire Survivors which I liked.  I guess its time to fire that up and give it a shot.
You should. No joke, it is amazing. It might be a single room and every stage a few waves of enemies but the build possibilities are insane and you unlock more classes, items, enemies and difficulties. Vampire Survivors can feel a bit passive as it all unfolds, and deconstructs in the end, around you. Brotato has much more player agency, is full of stats and infinitely more possibilities.

Pro tip: Every item has a tooltip, what you might not know is that when you hover over an equipped weapon it shows a second tooltip, displaying crucial information about secondary passives when stacked. Use it to your advantage.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

    Correct?

Yep, I play games with no real end, and when I play single player games like Fallout 4 I put in almost 1200 hours, (4 play throughs) and over 1400 hrs on Fallout 76.

I'm currently playing 7D2D since May and can see it being my main game for quite some time to come.

I only ever play one game at a time, and play all possible content including any side stories or what have you

Once I've consumed all content that I'm interested in I set the game aside, usually forever.

So yeah, I don't get out much.  ;)
    How is this humanly possible?
You must have the dopamine production of a god.

I have never invested that much time into anything much less a game.
Like 15-20 hours max and I am bored.

Like Kyleran, I enjoy open ended games. Actually prefer them.

I played both Morrowind and Oblvion for over 2 years each.

In Skyrim I have 2071 hours in the original game and 561 in Special edition.

I suspect Kylran and I play them in a similar fashion and try different characters making different decisions. Additionally, it's not all about quests and can be about our own goals. Also the interest in inhabiting a "world" over "playing a game" can be a part of it.

Lastly, these games allow mods which can add to a player's adventures.

I've played "Darkend" 3 times and it's a rather long mod that shouldn't be rushed. I highly recommend it.

If we played games as they came out, we would never clear the backlog, I think I have 45 games paid for and not played. I do realise that the games we talk about as they release may not be played by me in one to two years time unless they are multiplayer and there is guild interest. It is like we are in a time warp or something. :)
    I don't have a backlog
