Why do people use stupid names?

I have to admit that it bothers me. If you get into a RP type server, the names tend to detract from it. I tend to love immersing myself in a game, the setting, and so on. I think the sole fact that it ruins the immersion for me is what bothers me so much. Beyond that, I tend to avoid clans/guilds/cabals in games when they have ridiculous or offensive names.

    What a refreshing question.

I once inadvertently created a name that had a swear word in it from a non-English language. I followed this with the letters "man". So this left me with Swearwordman. Every week I was asked, do you come from my country by a random player. They must have thought I was an imbecile from their country who would do something like that.

Worst of all our guild had a girl in it from that country. She never said anything and knew I was from the UK. But as I got to know her better, she said these dreaded words, "Has anyone ever asked you about your name"? :)

Fortunately she understood and all was well.

So how to protect yourself from this? Do not put any of these letters at the start or end of in your name: boy, man, girl, women, guy.

American playing on UK server in wow, named my character Chopper. Didn't realize it was British slang. I just liked using axes...

That's one I've never heard of either.

Although for me it means extended forks and ape rack handle bars on a motorcycle.  :-)

unless you're on a RP server does it really matter?

i myself always try to make up a fitting name for my characters but i can understand why for others it doesn't matter..

i mean if you have no intention of roleplaying then you only really need a name on your character or account so people can get your attention.

I had fun once, it was terrible.

Actually for others, naming your character is one of the most hard thing to think of if you were about to start a game. :P

Depending on the game, they might be the only ones left.  Besides, ita fun to try and come up with clever or odd names

Off color naming has always been done to get a lol. I remember back in the day someone named their player city in SWG Hermouth so every time you loaded into the city from a shuttle or drove in you got a system splash message across your screen  stating... "You have entered Hermouth"
