Cute and colourful, this sort of look would be a game for preteens twenty years ago, now we are expected to love that look too.

I find colorful games have always been mostly played by adults.
Especially these kind, which use nostalgia for games 20+ years old.

It is the grim dark gritty realism that is played by kids.
CoD and GTA have always largely been played by 13 year-olds, a demographic very concerned about appearing mature.

I know I went through an edgy phase as a preteen where I wouldn't play "kiddie" games and instead played the darkest and most violent stuff I could.

The meme tends to be very true

    Greetings Discerning MMORPG Friend!

We did enjoy our time at PAX West this year! There's plenty more game coverage on the way from our time on the PAX convention floor that will start to hit the site next week. Some of those games include an Unreal Engine 5 Soulslike and a stylized anime tactical Rogue-like, both of which may have more appealing aesthetics, familiar gameplay, and look "cooler" than what's presented here.

I will say that our picks here are unique. I can't speak to what our other weirdos staff has picked, but I know that what I had chosen was due to the story and gameplay more than the visuals. (Though I can't dismiss the charm of a hand-animated game like Cricket: JRPG).

I suppose, what we're trying to convey in this article is that you can't always judge games by their graphics (or even a short trailer). I know I was personally surprised by my pick, and I hope that, even if these games aren't to someone's liking, that we gamers can attempt to keep an open mind when it comes to trying something outside of the norm.

    Happy Posting!

Hey I won’t knock people for liking stuff.  Different strokes for different folks.  But none of those look even slightly appealing to me personally. It’s not just graphics.

Glad you had fun though.  I hope to see game conventions take off again. I miss the old days of E3 and similar.

Yeah I doubt I would ever buy these games just at a casual glance.  I am not even a graphics guy but these dont look appealing to me at all.

This looks more like the games I get on epic for free that I never play.  Even epic sometimes throws you a bone, which I dont see in that list.

Somehow I doubt any of these will appeal to a large crowd.  The devs teams need to do better geez.

Who knows maybe one of these will breakout... only one I think has a chance is Capybaras... guess we will see.

It’s not upcoming, it has already released. To critical acclaim I might add.

We also didn't play it at PAX West, which was the article's premise.

I disagree, but I can see there can be a nostalgia element. I don't need dark and gritty, but I do like that. I like colourful, in the right game. But when I see pastels, toons that look like Cartoon Network (maybe doing a disservice to CN when it comes to quality to be honest) and gameplay that looks kiddie (maybe it is not, just looks it), then I say no.

But I don't expect every game to be made for me as some seem to do (not you Cactus), if you like it then play it, it is just not for me.

PAX in general has gone downhill for while now, i don't think this is the fault of PAX itself, but just changing of the guard so-to-speak; the guard being online-based directs and Televised/streamed shows.

The funding for in-person conventions is just miserable at this point, and i don't know how much longer it'll last.

Meetups on any scale are so much less likely to happen now, welcome to the post Corvid digital age.
