As with many MMORPGs, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen's development journey has seen its fair share of changes and evolutions. One of the most recent and significant changes was highlighted in the September Producer's Letter: a brand new art direction.

Ouch big mistake. Killed my interest in it. I was debating recently, ont he fence, about finally pledging to them. I am SO glad I didn't now. It looks like every generic free to play mmo from 5-10 years ago or a mobile game or both. This looks horrendous. I don't want WOW graphics only worse. The forums are on fire, I have a feeling they just destroyed their own game. So many backers just torching them for this and/or outright saying they're done.

"The team has been hard at work..." Funny, you wouldn't know it from looking at their output. Devs keep having these wildly unnecessary ideas to forever improve the game and then promise it will speed development along, which still remains to be seen. MMOs have these things called patches and expansions where the game can be improved after its release date. The most important part is that it actually has a release date...

Also, game is now so Disneyfied it's going to be a pita trying to get immersed into the world they touted all this time ("putting the E back into PVE"). The previous graphics may have been dated, but at least they had a degree of charm and identity that could be polished later on. Now we get to play Free Realms 2. Good job, VR!

Well... I suppose if this means that we actually get to play it someday, I'll take it. Just starting to get Vanguard: SOH vibes from this one... Once the compromises start, where do they stop?

I'm just waiting for a F2P overhyped sandbox WoW clone with full PVP, epic raid bosses, instanced group content, and Crysis-quality graphics to come out. That, or something fun.

This move was made because this is hail Mary of a game and its now moved from that to a snow balls chance in hell. It's unlikely this game will ever launch but it is the game (still) I most want to see launch. I personally am not turned off by art styles. As long as they are done in a pleasing and thought out way. This game for me has always been about the play style you just can't find anymore.

I wish i hadn't pledged! They were always saying the game would be realistic!

Just when you thought the fate for Pantheon couldn't get any worse.

These are giving major ugly Palia graphic vibes. No offense to anyone who enjoys art styles made for 10 year old children.

Everyone crying about graphics are the literal issue with games today... Studios making games with hyper realistic graphics that cost 70% of their budget and time to create... You end up with a laggy shit show game with no content...

Maybe people need to focus on content and how the game feels / runs over how it looks and maybe these studios will be able to actually make games that don't suck ass.

Aesthetics > graphics. In this case though, both are bad.

I don't hate it. I love hand painted stylized games, but would have liked this to be a bit darker. It's a tad on the Palia side of the spectrum.

They have taken the graphics down a notch and like you say though it is not pastels it leans to that. It certainly does not make the game look "unique" indeed it looks more common now.

I like the art style, looks fine to me and I am not a 10 year old, I am a 60 year old military vet, but art style means nothing unless they actually release a game

Dang you guys are harsh. Change of art directions=I'm out! Nevermind gameplay. Who gives a crap about that? I'm here for visuals, baby! Meanwhile the Mad World fans are playing a literal 2d sprite game that runs in a browser. Odd.

Art design is my gateway in. I don’t care about playing a game that looks ridiculous.

So for me we’ll see. I’m already more intrigued about Eternal Tombs which does not look “cute.”

I'm not keen on this change in artwork; went from something kind of realistic looking (at least in terms of fantasy) to straight up WoW/Fortnite art style and it is a bit lame. I'm still not completely regretting pledging to this game, but I am far less enthusiastic about it now.

It's not so much the art style change that I find the interesting part. I'm a guy who plays  text based MUDs. My big take away here is what it says about a game that's almost a decade into development changing the art style.

I'm betting a launch in under five years is probably wishful thinking.

Now don't get me wrong I think going from unity assets to inhouse art is great but the entire reason to use the unity assets in the first place was to speed up production. This will do nothing but slow it down. Making more concept art, more models, etc. If you wanted to go the freedom to make the art you want route sure but saying it's going to cost less and be faster than buying assets off the unity store is just press X to doubt.

By the time you get 3 or so minutes into that video it contradicts everything they just said in this article about it being faster and costing less.

I'm not a 3D artist but this just makes me raise an eyebrow. Any insights further explaining how this is going to make things cost less and speed things up would be welcome.

    I'm not seeing it.
