Then when you're invested the game starts to offer upgrades for real money. His narration is side splitting.

    The Carnival of Cash

Grind is part of gaming, one of the primary arts of great development is making you not realise you are grinding. When dlc and then microtransactions were brought in it became far harder to do the sleight of hand needed not to make it obvious.

Then "skin economies", loot boxes and subscriptions in F2P and B2P games came in, and with NFT and crypto coming up it will be even harder to not rub players face in the grind. But to an extent that's the point, don't grind, don't play, just buy.

Contrast this to a 'buy just the box' and nothing else solo game or a subscription only MMO like back in the old days, modern games literal have big advertising signs on the grind and skipping play. "Head to the  shop, one and all!

Today's games are a carnival of the marketplace with a Barker always in your ear telling you what you need to "come to the cash shop and buy". This has also irredeemably altered gameplay to suit the carnival of cash.

It is the selling of solutions that cheapens the game.

I call it "pay to not play". It's not really P2W, instead you pay so that you don't have to play the game. Want that new mount? Don't want to grind (play the game) to get it? Just pay for it! Why spend time playing the game when you can just buy your way out?

Never understood it either. There are no sense of achivement to bought stuff. I play MMOs specifically 'cause its grindy. So when someone was like "I'mma boost character to max lvl/get stuff for real money" I'm like:"Why do you even play the game? Maybe it's just not for you?!"

...and the game design becomes about making the solutions attractive, instead of making the game fun.

Bragging rights...why do 80 year olds buy Lamborghinis and drive them around town at speed limit.

To show they can afford it....same with P2W folks

Isn't this what crypto pay to play games aimed to solve?
