The Lords of the Fallen takes players to the dual worlds of Axiom and Umbral, but how well does the latest Soulslike hold up under pressure? Jason tackles this in his review.

I'd say that's lifted exactly from Dark Souls if they are "Estus," therefore the power-ups are in name as well!
Thanks for the review, Will eventually give it a try once I can actually finish Elden Ring. And the other Souls games I've purchased that I slowly turtle through.

I have to say souls games are becoming more and more of my go to.
First of all I was lucky enough to not have any performance issues since day one so I was able to enjoy this from the get go. The art design and the power of UE5 are the obvious pros of this game but what really surprised me was the world building, the atmosphere, the sound and especially the controlls to be this good and close to DS. Combat feels weighty and fun and the additions like the lantern just furter enhance the experience.
Now what about balance? In my opinion they also really nailed the, for soulslikes really important, difficulty balance.
Some might say that the first real boss might be to hard but I think this boss is a good example on how the game teaches you to learn the bosses movement patterns. If you don't have godlike reflexes you would't stand a chance against said boss but as soon as you figure out the attack patterns it gets a lot easier and imo that's how souls boss fights should always be.
Monster density at first glance seemed a bit higher than in DS but so far it was always still a fair challange. The leveldesign is heavily inspired by DS and NOT Elden Ring so don't expect an open world but instead a cleverly designed linear world with lot's and lot's of secret passages, shortcuts and hidden treasures, especially when you factor in the 'Umbral' parallel world a feature that when I first read about dreaded but now that I've played it started to really enjoy.
I'm currently lvl 93 and in the fire zone which isn't very far and I'm way overleveled yet it's still challenging and fun and my character still dies from time to time. So they even got that right, that in a soulslike you're rarely that overpowered that the game becomes truely 'easy'.
All in all I am very satisfied with LotF, so much that I wouldn't call it blasphemy when someone would call it unofficial DS4.
Added note, a friend of mine plays it on a PS5 and the performance issues seem to be completely gone.
edit: For me personally it would be even a 9/10 judging by where I am now at the game. Hope it will stay that way till the games ending.
If not I think I saw your problem....using controllers to play games.....pfft...Mouse /Keyboard for life...
