After the news that Bungie laid off staffers hit earlier this week, new information has come out explaining exactly why this happened and the extent of the layoffs. This is amid reports that the sales targets at Bungie were 45% below expectations for the year.

100% this.
Bungie is one of the worst studios in gaming, and they have been ever since Destiny 1 launched.

Except if they please gamers then they please shareholders.

I disagree entirely can you please all gamers all the time? No. But I think you can charge a fair amount make tons of money pay a good wage and make a lot of gamers happy. Your right it is impossible for everyone to be happy about everything. As a game maker I am sure you could point any day to some complaint about something that the majority of reasonable players who like that game can agree is fun.
It seems like a lot of gamers are malcontents with the amount of complaining and hyperbole that gets posted on any game website as oppossed to just saying I don't like it not for me. I bet though if you actually polled like real live actual players of those games they would say I don't like this or that I wish this was different thats not being impossible to please that is just stating preference. I do understand that developers have to at some point say this is our goal or dream or point of this game system and protect players from themselves to an extant. The problem is when more and more of your players who have supported you are saying wow that is no good and it is ruining the game i love maybe you need to do some hard self evaluation. Sometimes things do not hit the mark that is okay. They chased the almighty dollar and screwed themselves. Tomorrow they could fix it but you have to be willing to listen.
Look im not going to go on some crazy rant about shareholders. I wish we could stop making that example though. Do shareholders care about return on their investment yes they do that is the whole point.
Here is two things about that though 1. the common share holder has almost no say in how the company day to day is run or anything really. If bungie came to a shareholder and said were going to bilk our customers up to a intolerable point and your going as a result make 5 more dollars a share this year or next year or the next five years, but it might really hurt our image and future worth and you could stand to loose that value over time or even more. Unless your plan is to make the cash and get out like a bad ponzi scheme and you sell at the right time then you would never go along with that.
2. All the stock holders usaully only get to vote once or twice a year on company policies, board members and things like that. To really exert any real change you have to go with a group of like minded people and name someone a proxy so that vote carries the weight for change or to get someone who supports your policies on the board. But their are other shares that could be owned by huge funds which really increases their power over the company and their goal could be to bilk the company and sell. In the end most day to day things like prices are set buy the board or the person who the board appointed to run the company or someone he hired to come up with that stuff. The share holders are dependent on good information from those people and some kinda modicum of common sense. What I am saying is that most share holders unless their in the biz of making fast cash and dumping want policies that sustain good consistent long term value.
It is of course very different for private companies with single or few owners then that person who invested is where the buck really stops.
Another challenge is the only customers developers and publishers really listen to are those who spend money on their products, those who don't, not so much.
No matter how many gamers there are who do say "enough" there usually are far more who say, "sure," or at the very least, "OK, if I must."

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
