@Amaranthar, I was just pulling your chain a bit, while never playing either I'm pretty sure both UO and SWG were further to the left (more sandboxy) than EVE.

Don't take it personal though, I'm mostly fencing with you as I put little faith in men anymore, especially "legendary" ones.

    Thanks for that message.
"Legendary", now there's a word for you. How many legends are built up through PR, for the sake of sales. I can understand your take because of this.

Honest opinion about Raph. I think he's been bidding his time on a new MMORPG, because the gamers have been keyed up for the current systems (largely) until about 10 years ago when some (but not enough) started to realize that MMORPGs were getting somewhat old and stale. The numbers of such gamers have been growing over the years, while the games have gotten more stale. I think the timing is right for that "reset."
Both funding and this new tech (like Tim Cotton has been building) play a role in this too, naturally so.
That's what I think Raph has been waiting on, all three of those issues to erupt onto the stage.

That's no guarantee, but just the hope for it has me very excited about MMORPGs.

    Once upon a time....

I agree with a lot of what you say but your signature funnily enough sums up my note of caution. "Once upon a time" does mean he or any other respected figure from the past can deliver what we want. We can but wait for launch and if he comes up good posters on here will be the first to give him new laurels to wear!

LOL seriously?  You think he has been biding time for 10 years?

    More like wasting time.

Why do you even need to wait 10 years after you see a problem anyways?  All the devs he was working with are going to be retired now.  All his star power has faded.  Its been 20 years since he has made a splash on anything. This doesnt even make sense to me.

This is just nonsense to me,  its all about money, if he had funding he would have made a game.

By the time he actually delivers his game, half the people that even knew who he was will probably be too old to play or dead.

Waiting 25-30 years after your last release to deliver a game doesnt really seem like a good plan.

Next up, singer from yesteryear who has stayed silent patiently for 30 years decides to start a new rock group.

I certainly think this is about money not some masterplan on Ralphs part, but that does not matter, in the end we will get a great game or we will not. I am quite happy to give him the benefit of the doubt until launch,

Yes, seriously. It would do no good to make a great game if the market wasn't there for it yet.
You're stretching into things that don't connect here.
Most products aren't going to be about who made it, it's about the product.

    Unless you're Taylor Swift.
    And Raph's no Taylor Swift.

As long as it isnt a questfest like so many MMOs turn out to be....Give us a world that has lots of named mobs and is fun to explore....No more building the entire world around quests.
I'm basically done with themeparks, which, to me, is the kind of quest driven design you're describing.

They were OK for a short span but after we saw the same thing for years and years, game after game, it just got old.

Err themepark and sandbox are literally the two options.

    Both are going to stay.

Though most games will be a mix of both.
