Fortnite and LEGO have revealed a cross-over that is taking the battle royale to a whole new level. LEGO Fortnite looks like it's going to be a legit survival MMO, and it has Josh rather excited.

Was a little interested until author recalled a previous corporate announcement.

"Last year, the LEGO Group and Epic Games announced their partnership to shape the future of the metaverse and make it fun and safe for all."

The bolded phrase makes me very wary that's it will tie into some sort of WEB3 BS....

Not only that but our hobby does not have a problem with being fun and safe, stop creating causes to sell your product.

Also once again I am expected to want to be in a toddlers cartoon game with garish colour's and kiddie avatars. No thanks.

I think you read into this wrong. Lego has a game they made for VR/AR, which I think is only available on the Quest store. I don't think it has anything to do with Lego Fortnite... although I hope it does because that would be pretty fun.

So the toy brand 'LEGO' was what was needed in Fort-Night for it to become a 'Real' -- I'm sorry what? A video game with a live service?

Lego Bricktales is available on Xbox console and Steam as well in standard flatscreen versions. It's really hard so far because there aren't any hints or hand holding after the tutorial. Lego Worlds is still king in my book though.

Lego has tried hard in the past, a few times, to create an online version of their game. All those attempts flopped hard. They came across as low effort attempts to build a recurring revenue stream with the Lego IP.

I don't really trust Epic either. They pulled the pve Minecraft builder clone version of Fortnite in lieu of the BR version and its massive revenue stream. In all, with both of those in mind, I'll wait and see what this ends up looking like and how its sold before even getting the slight bit excited.

You can only play with up to eight players in Lego Fortnite. Not really sure that would be considered a 'real' MMO.

I'm trying it out on the Xbox. I'm still pretty leary that Lego or Epic won't pull the rug out from under this, but I can check it out nearly risk free. I'm also looking to see how monetization shoe will drop and if they'll try and pull some shenanigans like Gameloft did with Disney Dreamlight Valley.

I got all accounts connected and just loaded into the game client. It sure is busy with lots of promotional videos.

Overall, it was a very positive experience. The controls aren't bad, the visuals are nice, and the onboarding tutorial helpful. The building and crafting seem decent, if not a bit standard and predictable. They aren't trying to reinvent the genre it seems, just provide a very easy and approachable alternative.

A big plus, is that the server experience is configurable. There aren't a lot of fine-grained options, but it covers the main rules that people like to tweak such as dropping stuff on character death (they call it elimination), hunger/thirst, weather, resource costs, etc.

On the critical side, it really doesn't seem better than my other survival crafting builder options. It borrows heavily from ideas I've seen in Valheim and other survival types.

Another con is that it does feel very 'metaverse'. It's your same Fortnite account that you play BR with. The UI is also very busy (no news to those who play Fortnite I guess) and loud. It's a mess of menus and panels that is always connected to the cash shop.

I'll keep it installed and work through when I get the urge, but it probably won't be a main game for me. Playing Lego Fortnite just made me want to hop back into my Valheim and Grounded saves.

Good summary. Both my boys are liking it and it seems like a fun Lego game. Lots of skins and stuff to spend money on too - the Fortnite way! :)
If they are just using a cosmetic economy you can't hold that against them, when we hear so often about how gaming needs one revenue method after another to fund making their games. There are other ways than gambling and crypto.

While there are worse ways to monetize gaming I for one take exception to the cosmetic economy model but apparently most other consumers don't.

NGL it felt a little like trying on an odd pair of underwear at first. Like I said, the UI information overload is a bit over the top for me so that didn't help. It's still installed because it wasn't bad and I'm curious.

One thing I didn't mention earlier is how much easier it is to setup a game and invite friends. I'm still not sure how saves and persistence works compared to hosted worlds in more robust offerings, so that will play a big factor to me.

Since the game is actually Fortnite (engine and platform) and the "Lego survival" aspect is just a game mode, that means everyone already has all the same software and single account to deal with. So, players just need to login to Fortnite and join their friends. Unlike say Minecraft where you have the Java and Bedrock versions and everyone needs to have the same mods and client to play together which can be a big hassle.

On the downside, what you see is what you get apparently and if it's lacking or has some annoyance, there doesn't seem to be any option to change that.

Cosmetic is not ideal, but as you say there are worse ways. When you compare the way cosmetic distorts gameplay to the way P2W (including that found in PvE) distorts gameplay it is not in the same ball park.

Remembering of course that I am the guy in DAOC who the guild leader had to tell to "don't wear that rusted armour any more", wear the shiny armour. Back then I thought the shiny armour looked unrealistic. And when I played Lotro my Dwarven Champion always used a basic plate skin none of the fancy stuff.

So the cosmetic thing goes over my head and in Lotro those VIP's who had a similar attitude to me and wanted to put something into the game only had DLC's until the P2W crept in and we paid rather than have additional layers of grind.

Revenue in a game can be a dirty word, cosmetic laundry ain't that bad.
