No dedicated servers and will need to be online even to play single player or so I read... not a super good sign for this type of game not having proper dedicated servers a la conan exiles etc. Have been looking forward to trying thsi game but a bit bummed out by direction they are taking with this.

I've never played games like this on dedicated servers.  That always seemed like a poor man's MMORPG to me.  All the hassle with less of the benefits.

As long as we can setup our own server and dive in I'll be happy.

You don't really need dedicated servers in this game because of your "respite realm" is persistent, and you can drop in/drop out of playing with your friends. When you combine your realm cards to open a portal to a realm you can set it to be open (which will then have other players in it) or solo, and again your friends can drop in and drop out at any time. You can also share a respite realm with your friends by everyone setting that one to their respite realm and building together.

The devil will be in the details I guess. I prefer games offer self or third party hosting because that also typically means the ability to own and backup saves, have full control over server settings, choose the server host (including self), and an increased likelihood of mod support.

On the other hand game hosted server make server management and coop much easier and more seamless. This style is also much more open to cash shop microtransactions and more limited rule configuration and mod flexibility.

I still prefer more control over ease, but there are good games using both schemas.
