"intense turn-based battles" seems like an oxymoron. Tedious and time consuming for sure. Intense? hmm... Anyway, to be clear I have not played the game and don't really plan to, but I've played several turn based CRPGs in my day and my guess is the combat is largely the same.

As it should be. This is absolutely a top 5 game of all time.

I believe they are “intense “ because of the each situation, each set of choices when it’s the player’s turn.

Not heart pumping action so much as extreme situations.

Your mileage may vary as far as how you respond to such things.

Turn-based can absolutely be intense and stressful.

Absolutely recommend the Fuga Melodies of Steel series. It's as deep and tense as turn-based JRPGs get between its resource management and potential permadeath.

Valkyria Chronicles can be pretty intense

Ehhhhh. It's was a good game, but there were better this year. And not by a little, but by a lot.

I think it depends on what kind of game you like, or genre suits you better.
Personally, I thought BG3 was a really good turn-based crpg.
It was not my pick for game of the year, and I would think personal preference factors into these decisions more than anything else.

For the sake of contributing, my pick for game of the year is Alan Wake 2
One I waited until late in the year to play.
    Stunning game.

I think game of the year is a popularity contest tbh because it's all subjective in the end. When Steam threw out the Steam award games, a lot of them I never played or would consider playing.

I think Larian has been making really cool games for a long time now. It doesn't surprise me they're choosing to skip Game Pass, because their other games aren't on it either. They've always given me an old school vibe.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are coming to Game Pass (console). They aren't there yet, but if you check your GamePass mobile app, there might be a notification and install option for it. It won't launch until it is released, but you can queue it for install. Until then it will send you to the store.

BG3 also won the "Story Rich Award" (called something like that). Now I know gamers like to point things out to developers and they in turn must roll their eyes, but maybe Story Rich led to GotY and they can learn something from that?
