I'm currently playing GW and L2, I like lots of game content and well put together pvp systems, what do you guys think? Should I play it or not and why or why not?
the pvp in wow is hardly captivating and becomes repetitive to the point of being boring, leveling up the first time in wow is fun, the quests are alright and the game moves at a decent pace, after you get to 60 you join or start a guild and make progress through the 40 man raids, after you are in here for awhile it also gets boring. The problem with the 40mans is that you must go into it so many times that you know it far too well and its just same old same old. The pvp was more fun before they added civillians and thus killed city raiding imo. The battlegrounds and working up the honor ladder is alright but if you make it to the top you will never want to do it again.
Wow is addictive, it contains a bunch of good features but none of them are developed enough such that the endgame has a point where you just login and do nothing.
Fun Factor is what makes or breaks a game, if its not fun just play something else.
Really it comes down to "do you like raiding?" If you do, then WOW is a good game since you'll be doing a lot of it at 60. If not, you can play the game to 60, maybe do a couple of characters, then quit - that's actually not too bad overall (it can be fun), just don't expect to keep seeing new storylines, compete in PVP, or really have a spot in guilds that have lots of people your level.
If you want PvP stay away, at least for a few months after their expansion is released. They are saying lots of stuff about fixing the game, but personally I think they are just blowing smoke to move more boxes.
The game basically boils down to 4 things
Crafting
Fun, but ultimately has no place in the end game, and little place before that. The economy of the game is screwed up so much that resources sell for more than finished products. So for instance, you lose money by making metal into a weapon.
Questing
Can be funn, but it get's repetitive with all the fed ex quests. Can be a source of good exp, but straight grinding is still faster. Some quest rewards make them very worthwhile. However at the end game most of the story arcs get cut off by raiding, meaning it would be like only being able to read half a book unless you can get 39 people to join you. Personally I have no interest is running the same dungeon over and over with such a large group of people.
PvP
You can PvP from early on in the battlegrounds. But there really is no point. The mechanics of the game are very simplified. THere is no lasting effect on the gameworld like in DAOC where the low level BG's allow you to take a keep located in the center of the map. The battlegrounds in WOW make it so nothing carries over from game to game. And lower level players are capped in the ranking tree, so you might as well just level to 60 and then start PvPing, since you will lose your rank as you spend time in PvE.
That is probably the worst thing about the system, is that to get the rewards from the PvP system, you can't take any time off. If you stop playing for one weekend you could get deranked and have to do the last rank over again. And at the same time you are competing with your own faction for your spot, not your enemy. You also have to contend with players that can play 12+ hours a day, and people who share their account to keep it active 24/7.
PvE
Fun up until 60, at which point you basically raid for storylines and equipment, over and over and over. The raids lock you out on timers so you have to space your farming out over months and months. There is very little to do in the time between the timers, so you will find many players who only log on for raids, and log out immedately after. If you do join a raiding guild, most require strict participation to remain a member. And most use "Kill Points" for looting, which basically turns the whole experience into "Waiting in line for items".
Again if you don't participate all the time you fall behind everyone, so you wait longer for items. And most of these guilds only base DKP on attendance during kills. I've only seen maybe 1-2 that try to take into account the other facets of raiding, such as helping other people with their characters, gathering reagents, making raiding gear (resist items), helping people with their high level quests (Mages water quest for example).
So since you mentioned PvP, I would say don't buy it now, but watch to see if they actually keep their word this time with their expansion.
My sneaking suspicion is that they will go right back to what they did for the last year and a half after their expansion sales slope off. Making raids and ignoring every other facet of the game.
I'd also point you to Warhammer and Age of Conan, but thats a big waiting period, unless you manage to get into one of their betas this summer/fall.

if you're looking for seat-of-your-pants crazy action pvp... no, not by a long shot. there's nothing to gain by pvp'ing on a pvp server (like just out in the world at random), no cities to take over, no player to loot, just a few random honor points. the *battlegrounds* are instances where you meet certain objectives (take over this or take over that) to win the BG. it's the same as doing raiding instances. you do it X amount of times to get pvp faction gear and play for Y hours a month to gain pvp ranks... both so you can buy cheap items (which are poor compared to raid items). but you CAN do BGs without being in a guild, unlike raiding.
the game however is pretty and easy to level to 60. play a horde and an alliance both to 60 and you'll have seen the majority of the game content. but the quests are all pretty much *kill x critters* or *get me x items* which you get from killing x critters.
so it's interesting for a while if you've never played it, but don't come for the pvp. if you like pvp just to kill other players, then bgs and a pvp server could be for you. but if you do it for other reasons, nope.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

If you like both Guild Wars and Lineage 2 then you might also like WoW.
Ask these people if you should play Guild Wars or Lineage 2 and watch how much feces they fling.

Ya, I'm wrong and you're right because Guild Wars has "seat-of-your-pants crazy action pvp", lots to gain from PvPing other than ranking, no instances, and Lineage 2 doesn't have any grinds.
