Blizzard's action roleplaying game Diablo 4, the long-anticipated mainline title in the studio's beloved franchise, won the title for Online Game of the Year at the 2024 DICE Awards this week. In the other competitive categories this year, Baldur's Gate 3 continued its industry-wide sweep, and Spider-Man 2, considered overlooked as a winner by many fans, got plenty of recognition this time around.

Honestly, the award means nothing. Pretty much all awards are the same, mostly nonsense.

Just because you hate the game doesn't mean it's not well made.

" These titles frequently offer excellent matchmaking systems, innovative gameplay options, persistent content releases that further evolve gameplay, user customization and fluidity of gameplay"

Anyone who understands the craft of a game of this magnitude can see why they won this award.

I mean sorta. But let's not forget season 1 and 3 or the dupes they still haven't fixed or people crashing all he time. The game isn't terrible but I would not call it game of the year by a long shot.

    The game is great.
Some gamers either just don't like the game or they are just being negative.

Yeah all these award show are a load of crapola, like seriously who the hell still gives a crap about them I wonder....objectively the game made all the biggest basic mistake an arpg can do.

Bad skill trees, bad itemization, crap storage system, bad crafting.... ...I don't hate the game but GOTY...that's just laughable at best. Far too much cow towing cause Diablo and Blizzard in this case.

The award for most disappointing games of the year go to Starfield and Diablo 4

Yeah, just social fluff. We could probably include rated reviews, youtube/social media pundits, game sites, reddit, and forums like this.

I think D4 gets way too much hate, but it could also be a lot better.

I tired to think of another game that would be a better candidate in the strange category of "best online game" and couldn't come up with anything off hand. Any ideas for others games in the last year that would better fit?

Lol yeah, the game with MTX that cost more than the game itself is the best game of the year? I'll take whatever they are smoking.

Diablo 4 can turn into something good - as what people complain the most about are lackluster skill trees, booring «game loop» and poor itemization.
I know they’re re-doing the stat system in Season 4, they’ve updated some of the gameplay loops already and i suspect an expansion will fix the boring skill trees at some point

As a person who played Diablo 4 till level 70+ I do not think the game deserves this award.

It's a nice looking game but pales in comparison to Path of Exile. I have a thousand over hours in Path of Exile and I only finished the story and dumped Diablo 4. It's really a shallow game.

There is a difference between being well made and deserving online game of the year. I would put this down more to Blizzard buzz. Oh and I don't "hate" the game, you don't have to hate a game to question if it should be game of the year.

I feel like they shoehorn games like Diablo 4 into these Award categories namely just to have a Blizzard title in there, because if they treated the 'Online game' category with any actual respect for it; they'd have like at least 3 to 4 dozen other games they'd have to consider.

It's also possible they want Diablo 4 because it comes with controversy, and buzz, and clicks- , Diablo 4 fills alot of boxes on the BINGO card versus more respected online titles.

So yes, these Award shows are silly; which is strange because Baldurs Gate 3 and games like Spider-man deserve the attention; while Diablo 4 is just there because it craves the attention.

Diablo 4 was their online game of the year.
Who did Diablo 4 go up against?

    COD MW3
    Omega Strikers
    Street Fighter 6
    The Finals

So..yeah, Diablo 4 was the rightful online game of the year winner in a nomination pool like this one.

In your opinion, who should have won?

Now I know the Dice awards are irrelevant and shouldn’t look at anything from them. Diablo 4 should win the complete rip off award of the year and demand they refund players the 70 dollars they paid for it.

I suspect Award show winners are heavily influenced by how well known a game is, especially outside of it's target audience.

While I'm well familiar with BG3 and D4, (though not played them) outside of knowing of the COD and Street Fighter franchises I had no idea they had a new release for consideration. Heck, I thought Street Fighter died out back in the early 2000's. ;)

Omega Strikers, The Finals, never heard of them until this article. Still haven't bothered to look them up, doesn't sound like they even have any zombies.

    :)

Edit: Just looked up OS and The Finals, free to play multiplayer shooters...just ugh.

Games that I would not consider playing should never win any awards outside of their own genre, or platform, i.e. F2P Crap Shooters for Consoles or whatever.

     :D

Should have just given it to NMS or something.
