Just found this roaming the varies E3 websites.

Linky

It includes a shot of the interface... and it sure is ugly. No offense Simu. Hope the Gui gets some more work before release.
Games looking great though. Woohoo!

Nice screenshot, and thanks for the post about it too!  I uploaded it on the Hero's Hall site just now, so if that site ever goes down you can find the picture below!

Frosty, always on the ball! ::::20::

Btw, your site's coming together VERY nicely. It'll be a top notch resource for HJ when the games released.

I need to get over to the forums and do some reading and posting. /sigh So many forums, so little time. ::::14::

I know how you feel!  Sometimes Hero's Hall becomes over-burdening trying to balance school, work, and a girlfriend... while maintaining my hobbies like paintballing, and cars.  But I still try to put in a few hours every day to make sure it's always up to date, and the forums are active :)

I'm just curious...what about the UI is ugly to you?

We had quite a few people at E3 say they really liked it but we were running on 37" HDTV's at 1920x1080 so maybe the extra screen real estate helped. That screenshot you linked does look really cramped.

I'm not on the UI team so I don't know what the plans are for the UI but I'll be glad to pass along any feedback you have to them.

Question about the UI. How "customizable" is it? Are we going to be able to remap every key? Are we going to be able to move, resize and reshape every portion of the UI? Is it going to be unfinished at realease and require 3rd party mods like WoW does to play the game??

A major thing about the UI in most games is that it is made to appeal to as many people as possible. It's tough for game designers to make a UI that is customizable for some reason. I guess they just feel that why take time to make it customizable when only 1-10% of the population will use it (Especially in a game like HJ where your major player base will be RPGers, not picky "gamers")

It being cramped in the shot could be one of the things that turned me off.
There are a few other things that turned me off on the UI.

    - Looks like it's a Diablo health type bubble. Never liked these even in Diablo. I guess I'm so used to bars with a % in them that I'm spoiled.
    - The sea blue/greenish color is Kind of icky. Makes me think of the default background color on Windows 3.11. hehe
    - Seemed the map was huge. Again that's probably the cramped issue. I would love to see a screenshot in 1280x1024 or perhaps bigger. From what I've seen from blurry E2 shots the maps isn't really that big. If course it could be that people are just resizing the map and I wouldn't know it.
-lastly it seems to have just struct me as style-less. For all I know this could be a place-holder GUI while the uber one is worked on but it seems very generic.

On good notes. I think the icons look very nice. ::::02::

Just out of curiosity why have to compasses? One on the minimap itself and one standalone above it?

Well I'm a die hard RPers and I'm very picky about my GUIs. Perhaps I'm the exception to the rule.
Most of my RPer friends are quite picky as well about GUIs just as much as they are about gameplay and depth.

Somehow RPGers and gamers can't be both? Or are me and my friends just abberations? ::::02::

The GUI is XML based, and you will most likely be able to customize it however you want. Also do not expect it to look the same at the time of beta. Our GUI experts will most likely tweak and fine tune things as we get closer to Beta, and then some more after Beta feedback.

Yeah I assumed GUI tweaking would happen throughout the dev phase and well into the beta testing.
    XML, excellent.
I probably should have worded my original post differently and less offensive (UGLY). Apologies for that, I'll think next time. ::::02::

I like the UI mostly. I don't like the health/mana bubbles in the top left corner (if thats even what that is). It looks pretty silly in comparison to the rest of the UI. Plus having just a small bar with an actual value is by far my preferance : ). Also if the mini-map rotates, which it looks like it does from the 'extra' compass around it, that sucks. My mini-map has to stay put. if it rotates around I get disoriented . A mini-map that rotates and can't be kept in one place is enough for me to not play a game what-ever it is. It should stay still and just have a small dot or even better an arrow pointing the way I'm going. For the rest I like it :) The icons look great!

So, is this game a freebie?

Cause those graphics look very dated and crappy.

Dabble, go to http://www.heroshall.com/ssp1.php and tell me if those screenshots are outdated.  k?

Well, now those are much better.

I stand corrected.  But then again so does a man in orthopedic shoes.  Now what?

I think the UI looks pretty good. Anything can be improved upon (the map is a bit too big, for example), but all in all it looks better than most.

If something as insignificant as the minimap causes you to abandon games, I can't imagine you play too many games for long.

Honestly, I don't usually notice the GUI too much. My preference is something like EQII, where you can turn off all the graphics and just have invisible boxes around the bare essentials like hotbuttons, the chat window, and your health/mana status. Is it a game breaker if the GUI isn't to my liking? No. Who cares about the GUI as long as it isn't eclipsing half the screen or not allowing you to perfom needed functions?

Oh, and I like the stylized health meter. It's refreshing to look at something different than a colored bar that depletes from right to left. It seems like EVERY game has that. It's not a deal breaker, but it IS a nice break.

The character in that screenshot looks like she's gone through an OIL PAINT filter! ick. The other pictures on the official site sure don't look that bad.

The fact that you can make a character look bad is a good thing though. You have enough customization to make anything you want. During E3 I made a complete mongoloid character just to prove that it could be done. Someone else made a paisley monstrosity in full plate. You won't have to be the cookie cutter supermodels in HJ.

I find many screenshots are either really nice or barely decent. Some of those have a very grainy aspect to them. Almost as if some screenshots where made with a different engine or something.

The minimap scales up and down by hovering the pointer over it and rolling the mouse wheel.  It'll be as big or as small as you want it to be. :)

Also, you can just turn it off if that's your preference.

You see, this is why HJ rocks.  This seems like an obvious, simple thing, but 90% of gamemakers fail to do it. Maps you can make big or small. Maps you can turn on or off. Huzzah, HJ!
