Interesting postmortem on Shadowlands. I think I made it a month before I threw in the towel, but I just assumed my days of grinding MMOs were behind me as opposed to the game being that bad. While I do think my MMO days are behind me, I guess it wasn't just me that didn't connect with that expansion.

7.25 million subscribers currently and rising while going into an expansion.

I guess WoW isn't as dead as people want it to be.

Also, look at the massive spike for Classic ....and then the massive decline in the months following.

Classic is pretty much the big reason they've been able to sustain those numbers; and they don't have the Chinese market like they used to so they can't rely on that.

Numbers aside this game is at probably one of the riskier points now, with Cataclysm Classic at it's doorstep, a weird 3 act structure for a expansion and using modified versions of Classic servers on a seasonal-basis; this is like swinging and flailing in deep desperation.

I do hope Activision goes to HonestCon2024 to lie to people again in all it's honesty.

Allways eyebrow rasing to see how invested Blizzard execs are in Modern and uninterested in Classic, you would think interest in Classic might be telling them something.

Assuming those numbers are anywhere correct, which I doubt since Blizzard didn't provide or confirm.

Launches tend to be spike-y, but even after the drop-off the numbers post-classic seem on-par or higher than peak Battle for Azeroth until after Shadowlands. This definitely matches my anecdotal experience, as most people I played with on classic were back for classic and hadn't played the recent WoW expansions otherwise.

I do find it interesting that the other "classic expansions" - burning crusade and wrath - didn't result in much of a spike. I didn't play them myself so I don't have a sense of how others felt playing them. But the assumption has always been that those original expansions were peak WoW, yet that doesn't seem to have panned out that way in the classic iteration.

The numbers align with officially released statements.
Others have said they are very close.
The next time Bellular interviews Blizzard staff maybe he can get an answer. But, they probably won't be able to because it would need to go through Microsoft PR first.
