Not surprising. The only new game I have played in the past few years is BG3. I don't have much good to say about the new stuff that has been coming out the past few years.

More accurate to say, 60% of playtime went into games launched 6 years ago that have seen many updates since then. None of them are literally the same game they were 6 years ago. That's like saying people using Word are writing on 40 year old software.

I know you guys at MMORPG are all rich and all. But shit is expensive these days. Nvidia is spearheading the redistribution of wealth from the poor to the themselves. All the developers want to optimize their newest games for the latest and greatest gpus. Fuck anyone still using a GTX right? Fuck anyone still using 8gb of vram amirite?

So yeah. We'll continue to play old games. Because fuck you too.

Strictly looking at MMORPGS.... The older ones still standing still have their appeal. The main MMORPGS... WoW GW2 BDO STO FFXIV ESO (maybe SWTOR) still seem to be doing relativity well and still receive updates, so why not play them?

EQ is still getting expansions and Runescape and LOTRO are still playable, not to mention how many emos and private servers are out there for UO and SWG, and the new one for CoH.

No reason to wait for the next greatest MMO when the old ones are still around with lots of content that is less disappointing than whatever may be on the horizon.

I'm just here to say that I don't think Roblox should really count. It's not a game so much as a platform to build games. Both of my sons play Roblox and it's probably the closest thing currently to an actual metaverse. If you exclude the fact it's not at all VR and most titles look like some cheap lego universe knockoff game, with one login you can get access to over 40 million games. Yes, 40 million. Some are premium, but the vast majority are free to play. Anyway, to say Roblox is in the top 6 games played would be similar (though not exact) to saying Steam is in the top 6 games played. No one plays Steam. They play games on Steam. Same with Roblox.

Well I don’t play any of those games but I do spend time more time in older games.

    Darkest Dungeon
    Morrowind
    Skyrim
    Lord of the Rings Online
    Some Daggerfall
    Dark Messiah

Some newer games that are made with an eye to Older Games like Graven.

The only modern game I’m enjoying is Dragons Dogma 2.

Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

What I found interesting among that report was that there wasn't a traditional MMO or MMORPG among them. They are mostly all live service multiplayer games, but session based or super popular among kids (like Minecraft, Fortnite and Roblox).

I think 10 years ago we would have seen the likes of WoW crack a list like this, but that's when these multiplayer live service games were really just spearheaded by the MMO genre. Now everything is using the tech MMOs were built on two decades ago.

There's an article idea here somewhere, I just know it, lol.

Also, I'm still laughing at the implication we're all rich over here, lol.

I'm probably not the best gauge of things because I'm backlogging a lot more now. But there's a lot of amazing games coming out over the last few years, and almost every one of them I've picked up has been an absolute delight.

I wanted to buy 2k Drive at launch. To get all the content it's locked behind buying the higher tier of the game. To get all playable content you need to spend $159.99 Canadian. Also $90 solo player  games that have micro transactions. Or I can get a bundle pack of Dragon Dogma 1 with all DLC content for $5.99. Or the latest Tom Raider trilogy for $25 bucks. It's a hard pill to swallow. Game developors are losing their minds.

There are plenty of new games that come out with modest requirements so having the latest hardware is not at all necessary.

Also, for profit games are for profit. They are of course about the redistribution of wealth from the player to the maker, as it should be.

If you want to play for free then play a f2p game and deal with the manufactured inconvenience such usually come with.

I think cost really is the major issue. Most of these games have a lot easier barriers of entry than the new ones. Many of them people KNOW what they are getting into, good or bad. As stated too, they have been built and rebuilt to get where they are today.

The games coming out today are more expensive, are being released as a premium game at a premium cost and failing.

In the mmorpg genre it’s the same. We all complain there are no good NEW mmorpgs but that’s because the ones we go back to or continue to play are in much more playable states, a lot have sales and continue to push out huge updates.

For the 20 to 50 hours you played them amirite?

Most people play multiplayer games for far more hours having greater longevity in their core designs.

looked at the games I played this year and I fall into the old games mold but then again I am an old gamer

civ 6 being my most played, then WoW, Solasta, Maneater and Outer Worlds with Diablo 4 getting some play time the past month but with my old 1050ti D4 dosnt run all that great...thats probably the biggest reason I dont play newer games, I dont want to buy another comp to have to play them

"The report is damning for developers looking to release new games as it appears more and more that gamers prefer to stick to the games they know and love rather than giving new games a real shot at capturing their attention."

Or this speaks to the quality, monetarization and early access release of todays gaming. This is evidence gaming is not getting better and better, time to face up to that.

Yep I think this hits the nail on the head, my son-in law was telling me the other day that he has over 6000 hours in fortnite, I buy games on a monthly basis and spend perhaps at most 100-150 hours playing them (some more, depending on the game), he just plays the same game every day.

Its an interesting study and its not surprising. I work in higher education and I recently attended a "characteristics" of this current generation of students who will be in college in the next few years (so 11-15 or so age group) and there were some interesting points. First, they are not keen on new technology. We always think of them as tech gurus but in reality they know what they know and thats it. My son can own games and Tik Tok and Youtube and all things he does regularly. But asking him to use Microsoft products is like me trying to do math. He prefers Google docs because he knows it and does not want to learn anything new. Also, they are most likely to not read instructions but look up a video on Youtube but not just any video but a video of someone doing what they are trying. Whereas I may go to the company's website and download detailed instructions, this generation will go look for Youtube videos first. It almost like some sort of hybrid-kinesthetic learning mode. Lastly, there attention span is short but so is there dedication span. We joke about X(Twitter) and Tik Tok with providing short, dedicated content but thats what they want. They are not into movies, and long books and things that involve a detailed commitment. Every single game both of my kids play are session based, drop in and out type of games. It makes perfect sense that these are the top games when looking at the study as it fits that generation. This is also why many games have adopted similar playstyles. And I think also why many of us in older generations find them fun to start but grow bored. We are just wired differently.

Now the standard disclaimer is that this does not apply to everyone in a generation but the common trends. There are always exceptions to the rule.

Only 6 years? I put 100 hours into Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen since DD2 launched. 70$ for bad performance and anti-cheat on a singge player rpg is a No Go for me.
  • RienniRienni Member UncommonPosts: 43
Most of that list are free-to-play and cheap to buy games. You have millions of players (mostly young people) whose only choice is to play something cheap or free.

If companies can make good games and keep the price reasonable (like Helldivers 2) or a decent free-to-play model then it will start skewing toward newer games.

Just shows you the industry has become stagnant and why many people feel like this generation of consoles hasn't even started yet.
The developers are chasing NFTS, AI, Blockchain, Lootboxes and tons of other dubious crap - in addition to chasing players who parachute into a game, vomit all over everything, and then leave before the so-called game saving ideas they championed even get off the drawing board.

Before listening to the player base a developer should ask the player a few questions:
    1. How many games have you played in the last 90 days?  35?  GTFO.
    2. Do you think FTP is a good idea?  Yes? GTFO.
    3. What's the longest you ever played a single game?  3 days?  GTFO.
Stop catering to people who are looking for happiness and find players who are already happy, but just see games as entertainment.  Tired of the no-lifers that blow into a game, max everything out in 72hrs., dump all over the community, and then split.

FO was released like in October, I know people who maxxed it, left complaining it was too dull with nothing to do to go play Ravendawn, the 'perfect' replacement - and have already left Ravendawn.  They'll puke all over Ravendawn, move onto another game, and blow through 1/2 dozen other titles between now and Dec 2025.

You just aren't going to keep those folks happy.
    Don't even try.

You have summed up here a lot of the miss match between what studios think gamers will buy into and what the reality is. Gaming studios are currently in a race to the bottom, hoping every bigger launch "bangs!" will secure their titles success. But what is happening is that gamers will not even stay around for the first dlc, battle pass or whatever.
