It doesn't matter that you can pay. What matters is that you can play without paying, and that most of the revenue comes from cash shop items. That means the publisher/developer is incentivized to spend their resources creating new cosmetic items and DLC, not on server support.
I think that’s going a bit out on a limb.

If the servers don’t work the game doesn’t work and if the game doesn’t work then no purchases are being made regardless of new “cash shop items.”

I disagree. People who are not paying a sub will weather the storm and come back once the servers are up again. They do this because they don't really have much choice. If they want to play a better game with better server support, they have to pay a sub, which they are not willing to do.
People who are paying a sub will come back again as well. Not sure why you think they won’t.

It’s logical that that if servers are not up then no one is paying additional money.

Also, people are making a lot of assumptions on what they use for servers. Unless of course there is an article or quote somewhere?
I went back even after my lifer account got stolen and banned. I recently went through an issue with them about billing me for another year when I had already canceled. Took me 5 months to get my money back and I lost another account because of the dispute....which is fine with me they can have it just not my money. This company has been a mess for years with both ddo and lotro. I love lotro but I hate the company. What can you do aside from not give them money. I won't be going back ever again. As a alpha and former lifer it's pretty sad the game is what it is now.

Sorry to hear that. To be clear, I'm talking about people who didn't have major issues.

Not sure why you lost another account though?

This is the dumbest shit I have ever read

ESO, BDO, GW2, and a slew of other top level games are F2P

There is no shortage of other game out there for the people looking to play something on a very limited budget

Seriously does anyone here know how much it would cost them to upgrade? Is it so cost prohibitive because it's dumb that they just go on like this. I mean I am not lying I just got sick of the lag in DDO, it really got to a point where I said 'fuck this'.
As a little bit of a burn to someone else on another topic that was crying that GW2/Anet making 80 Million a year was nothing, I would say that if Standing Stone was making 80 Million a year they would not be having these problems

But yah, the lag was unreal, either by the nature of their code, or the quality of their servers, they were not doing well

But then again keep in mind that Standing Stone was just a group of devs that pretty much pitched in and bought DDO/LOTRO so they could keep their jobs, as Turbine was shutting them down

When a sub game has continual server outages, that game loses subscribers. Not only is this common sense, it is well-documented. It's the kind of problem that can kill a sub game.

At the very least, the developers of sub games end up issuing credits along with their profuse apologies for even the smallest outage. They are very clearly, strongly motivated to keep the servers up and running at all times, apart from scheduled maintenance and things like DDOS attacks.

Going from one garbage f2p game to another garbage f2p game is not "playing a better game." People who refuse to pay subs for online games are going to spend their lives swimming in the sewers no matter what. The games you listed are not "top-level" by any stretch of the imagination, unless you are talking about the top layer of the very bottom level of gaming.

It's well documented? Which game are you talking about?

I would say that any game that has continual server outages will not be played much longer because people aren't going to waste their time. They'd rather play something that doesn't kick them or that is up far more than down.

    Define better.

I liked BDO's graphics and combat more than WoW's. I liked the world building more (not the lore, but the way the cities felt in particular, and its node system). I loved the workers system. I hated its UI. WoW has some pros too (raids, group content, lore). Same for EVE and RS.

All games have pros and cons. The rest is up to personal taste.
No! Only one MMORPG can rule them all! :D

They are have their good and bad points, the fact we would prefer to play one rather than another does not mean it is the best at everything.

BDO is the worst game on the f2p list you made, so by extension all sub games are a million times better.
