Conan Books?

LaserwolfLaserwolf Member Posts: 2,383

When I first took notice of this game I found myself really interested in the cult following the books have. I had no idea Conan was anything but a movie.

I tried to take a crack at the books but I hit a wall when it came to what order I should read them in. I believe I only found 1 site and it was confusing as hell when it came to the timeline. I was wondering if anyone who has any knowledge of the books could give me a simple order of the main books so I can head over to Amazon and order a few? Would really be appreciated.

It's been a long time since I read them.  I loved them when I was a kid.  Now that I'm a bit older I realize they arent the most well written books out there; it's easy to tell the eara they were written in.  That being said, I believe Robert E.  Howard died in his 30's...if he would have had a few more years, he may have become one of the greatest writers of the century.

I think this is the correct order(the order they were written).  If I remember correctly most, if not all are not written in chronological order.

    The Phoenix on the Sword
    The Frost-Giant's Daughter
    The God in the Bowl
    The Tower of the Elephant
    The Scarlet Citadel
    Queen of the Black Coast
    Black Colossus
Iron Shadows in the Moon (aka Shadows in the Moonlight)
Xuthal of the Dusk (aka The Slithering Shadow)
The Pool of the Black One
    TheValeofLostWomen

There are more, but this should be a good start.

There are really good and are not the edited ones I first read in the 1970's.  Not saying the 1970's ones were bad, it got me hooked.

I did some research about the books on Wikipedia and it seems that a lot of the stories were short stories, or left incomplete. Apparently those who aquired the rights to all the Conan Books and Stories wrote their own and even went back and completed the stories Howard left unfinished.

It all seems very messy, but I appreciate the replies and will follow your recommendations.
