I'm about 20 hours in and having fun with it. The further I progress the more other features open up, which is nice. I agree with most of your review, but my only real complaint is lack of character combat. The rest of the game is fun and grindy enough for me to not really care. I give it a 7.0

I'm so glad you're enjoying it!! There are definitely some fun points. I may go back in a few months to see how I feel about it, and possibly write an update. :)

THe should've made the players humanoid dogs and called "Dogs and Bones " !

I...would play a game where I could manage an all animal crew of pirates sailing the seas!

Once you finish the main story line the game gets pretty stale. All those crafting mats arent even used. getting the best items for your ship requires endless hours of grinding the same slow end game content. Other then that there is literally nothing to do to progress any further...

Maybe when the seasons start rolling out it'll bring a little variety to the game. First season starts next week. Looks interesting.

As a sailor, I have some basic questions. When you start your first ship, do you get to pick what kind of sail configuration it has? For example, a lateen rig vs square rig?

Does the type of sail make a difference in the game? For example, a lateen sailing rig can sail into the wind whereas a square rig cannot. If you were a pirate on a lateen rigged boat, you could easily escape a square rigged boat by sailing upwind. If you were on a square rigged boat, you could escape by sailing downwind, since square riggers go faster downwind than lateen rigs.

Does the wind speed and direction make any real difference in the game? I watched some videos and saw ships doing what appeared to be impossible moves. For example, two boats coming at each other and both have the wind at their backs.

What about ammunition? Heavy cannon round shot is used to shoot at the hull in an effort to punch holes and start flooding. Grapeshot is like a shotgun, it does little damage to the boat, but kills a lot more crew. Does the game have anything like that?

I'm hoping that these things are in the game, so that you would need to have the same kinds of skills a real pirate on a real sailing vessel would need. I'm afraid though that the "sailing" part of the game is just a skin, and it's not really a sailing game at all.

Yeah, i'm just going to play Black Flag again. It looks better and every aspect of the gameplay is more enjoyable.

I only played the beta, but I doubt it's been updated since.

Type of sail made no difference, it's basically just a speed stat.

Wind direction seemed to be localised, rather than global. So, no effect on combat tactics. However, that may have been a bug (I reported it as such), because when i was testing this I could change direction by 180 degrees and the wind was still coming from the same direction (relative to my ship).

You could sail directly into the wind, you just sailed slower. I only tried out a couple of boats during the beta, so im not sure whether some do better on a run and others do better reaching. The boats I tested all went fastest when on a run.

In other words, the sailing aspect of Skull and Bones had no link to real sailing. This was a big disappointment for me too.

Had this been available on Steam I might have purchased it. Was on my radar until I found out it was not offered on Steam.

It's 50% off in less than 2 months. Ubisoft is doing well.
