Not all new things bring positive reviews, as Blizzard learned with the latest Plunderstorm Batlle Royale game mode they introduced to World of Warcraft Dragonflight. Despite the negative response, Blizzard says they won't stop experimenting with new things.

    Yeah even though they laid an egg here, I give them props for trying SOMETHING. WoW hasn't tried anything new in PvP in ages. It's unfortunate how players put MMO devs in a Catch 22 of if they don't update the game they get lambasted for 'abandoning' the game. If they do make changes then they get lambasted for changing the formula. I can tell you about the last job I'd want on earth is anything on an MMO team. It's just a no-win situation.

    I know I dont speak for everyone, but for me at least, part of the problem with Blizzard is that they never do anything "new". Pretty much every new game or new feature in a game, is something they took from somewhere else. Sure, credit where its due, they usually polish it, or refine it in some small way to make it their own, but Blizzard has never had an "original" idea. They are kind of like Apple in that way, they see what works for everyone else, they polish it up, they make it their own, and it ends up being a decent product, but never innovative. Always playing catchup to someone else.

    That criticism can be thrown at every developer in the market. It's like music. To go back to what was "original" you have to go back centuries to the people that inspired Bach and Beethoven. Everything else is really just derivative works in some form. While computer gaming hasn't existed centuries because computers haven't exited that long, unless you built Pacman or Defender you're building something that's derivative. Look at Helldivers 2, which is insanely popular, it's just a 3rd person shooter that took heavy inspiration from Starship Troopers. Extremely derivative and yet people love it. Even EQ or UO is derivative of the table top games like D&D or GURPS which predated those games by a decade or more. Blizzard is just more obvious in their deriving than others. Go look at Game Workshop's Warhammer and Warhammer 40k IP's if you want to see where Warcraft and Starcraft came from.

    Personally, I'm looking forward to the "WoW Remix - MoP" coming in a few weeks. I think it's great that there are so many ways to experience WoW. And like any software company they shouldn't be afraid to try something without worrying whether it will succeed or not. Some of the greatest things are born out of accidents.

    The same point of view in music too. The problem is established developers and musicians try something new (e.g. Metallica's album with Lou Reed) and people "poop" on it so they have to fall back onto stuff similar to what they've done.

    You cant make good gaming experience by committee. Nothing worthy can survive the forest on execs in modern ESG companies. Every step in the ladder you lose something until you have a turd of a feature/story/mode/design...

    It really does feel that way some times, back in the day there was far more "one developers vision" and the game lived or died on that alone.
