The temptation of being a snarky jerk is certainly there, but I don't think that would lead to anything constructive.

As someone who has played FFXIV since the ARR Beta, it's surprising to see how much the community has (d)evolved over the years. Coining terms like "tank anxiety" while the jobs have been simplified to the point of somnolence is a bit exasperating.

To anyone reading this that genuinely feel anxiety of any form while tanking, really, just hold W and do your two-button AoE rotation until you hit a wall while rotating your defensives. That's all there is to it.

The most complexity you can possibly have when tanking is some fights having tank swapping mechanics, but other than that, it's a very straightforward process.

I'm of the belief that "tank anxiety" is not any more real than "dps anxiety" or "healing anxiety" are. That is to say, there's nothing particularly daunting about the roles that warrants having stage fright over your performance.

FFXIV, for better or worse, is extremely formulaic and predictable. Bosses will always use the same moves at the same time, so once you run the content once or twice, there's no reason to be scared. The game won't throw you a curve ball, and the sooner you realize every mechanic is recycled, the sooner you can get over yourself. It's really not that deep.

As a long time tank in many mmorpgs the best way to deal with this is to give the complainer a nice big stfu sandwich (or in 14's case, party kick the lame). Often times its dps which are just lazy and useless anyway. In FF14 the majority of them don't even know how to use skills that benefit the synergy and effectiveness of the party, but instead focus on trying to get high dps, because "killing it fast is the only best way duuurrrrrr"

It's really not that hard. I've been tanking in FF14 since I unlocked DRK years ago and it's one of the least stressful games to tank in. Your job is either to hold aggro or if you're the off tank support the main tank with whatever defensive abilities you can use on them. If you get one of the people who think that wearing a diaper while they play so they don't drop DPS makes them cool then just ignore them.

Mostly I think it's because the tanks need to know how to lead others through the dungeons which means they need to know the routes, initiate first contact with each mob or boss, hold aggro and need to understand the phases of all the fights throughout and stay alive. As soon as they lose most of the aggro fight is over, healer folds, dps folds and that's a wrap.

In FFXIV's case, the "routes" are literal hallways and it's impossible to deviate. And aggro is pretty binary, as long as you have tank stance on and have a pulse, you'll never lose it.

The things you mentioned do apply in other games, though.

Anxiety is one aspect of this phenomenon that should be explored. For others, it may just be simply being burnt out on the drama. For some, like myself, that have tanked since EQ in '99 I am not really apprehensive about tanking in FF14. I just don't care to do it because of the players. While there is a large deal of pressure and responsibility placed upon tanks and healers, many, myself included, actually enjoy that to a degree. That feeling of protecting others either by keeping them from harm or by ensuring their health and buffs.

FF14 is a difficult one because of the direction SE has taken it. By putting the standard role divisions in the background and making every job essentially a DPS that takes hits, heals hits, or buffs hits, this particular game has in a way caused a lot of players to shift mindsets from the the aforementioned protector, team centric types to a more rawr dps iz king approach.

This is by nature a more self focused playstyle which can be nice and relaxing from time to time but when you start to design an entire game around it there is a likely shift in attitude. We see a lot more talk in recent years about 'my time' and 'my sub'. With a prevalence of focus on an individual and not the team we have seen the current state of blame, rage-quiting, and general hostility grow. No, FF14 is not the first, nor the last. WoW was very heavy with this as well in later years and there are parallels between the two games that can be explored.

There is also almost an entire paper that could be written on the fact that through the oversimplification of modern MMOs to appeal to a larger market, many usual non-gamers have entered the system. These individuals who may have zero background in team sports or games but only really know competitive arenas like cards or boards games come in with a self-focused mind-set exacerbating the situation.

It is a good article and I do appreciate good discussion on topics like this, especially as an 25 year veteran of the tank and healer role. I just think there is also a good portion of players that aren't necessarily anxious about tanking, they may like myself, be simply done dealing with the BS.

I haven't tanked in FF14, but I've done it in Rift, EQ2, LotRO, and New World. People can be dicks and really add to the stress. That's true for any key group position, not just tanks. I do a lot of healing too and again, people can be ungrateful and excessively critical.

Also I agree with the comment above that in a lot of mmos the Tank is expected to understand the best route through the dungeon/raid and the boss mechanics for each fight and how they're to be started. That can be stress with people back seat dungeon-driving.

Like another person said, practicing the run builds confidence. Do it with friends or patient guildies. Don't everyone go in the fight trying to learn it all at once, if there are experienced teachers available, especially for the tank or healer. Have an experienced group carry the new tank and explain how they should run the dungeon/raid in a live run. Learn from others and improve on what they taught you. People don't get raids on farm in the first run. It takes practice.

I tanked in wow a bit. When burning crusade came out it felt like every dungeon was like a raid.

Relating to topic tanking can be stressful. Keeping agro, positioning of boss, doing the mech correctly, and watching your party members so they are doing things right like doing enough damage. All this can add to stress if you don't know what you are doing, new to tanking or not geared properly to tank.

I usually main tanks on MMOs and tanking leveling dungeons in FF14, especially during Shadowbringers, was some of the worst times I've had in MMOs in a while.

The harassment was so bad tanking a dungeon in FF14 that I quit for 2 years.

People keep complaining about WoW having a bad community but in the last 5 years I've seen far more toxicity in FF14 than all other MMOs combined, including WoW.

Think I've only felt nervous tanking was my first few tries, because I didn't know what was expected of me. Beyond that, I've had no issue. Very little content in FF14 is complicated enough that it requires specific knowledge. If you are someone who has "Tank Anxiety", all you need to know is the following:

    • Very rarely, in any ff14 dungeon, is there a "Best Route". It's virtually all linear.
    • Your damage output doesn't need to be exceptional. 3+ targets, AoE. Less then switch to your single target.
    • You'll find it hard to lose aggro ever. Only times you'd lose it is if you miss your AoE when a pack first leashes.
    • Try not to overlap your defensives, unless you've got a massive pull of enemies.
    • All Tanks have a panic button. Over-pulled and Healer not in range yet? Slam that bad boy.
    • Most other people know the mechanics. Watch what they're doing and copy them.
    • The actual hard content is where you need to know your stuff: Extremes, Savages, and Ultimates. If you aren't doing this content, then you're golden.

It may seem like a lot of points, but it boils down to: Just AoE and use defensive cooldowns without overlapping.

If you're on a Raiding progression team, then you're going to need to know your stuff inside and out. But if you've got Tank Anxiety from dungeons, then you're likely not a Raider lol

I can see the issue but do we need a phrase that lends itself to drama, emoting and fear? How about Tanking is Tough?

I've played Gunbreaker as my choice for tank. It is a kick ass job. My only problem, a "me" problem when playing tank, is that it feels like a chore sometimes. Perhaps it's just that I am lazy, because when you play as tank, you are also a leader of the group. It is your job to move your group through the content and keep them safe. Combat is easier, I admit, than the other roles. But I never experienced stress being a tank. Being a healer, however, is stressful as hell.
